Trailblazers hold off MSU Denver Friday, 61-54

Dixie State women's basketball earned its 10th victory of the season on Friday, holding off a late MSU Denver rally to claim a 61-54 triumph inside the Auraria Event Center in Denver.

With the victory, DSU reached the double-digit win plateau in the fewest amount of games played since a 10-1 start during the 2010-11 season.

After a back-and-forth first half saw DSU take a 28-24 lead to the halftime break, the Trailblazers (10-4, 5-3 RMAC) seized control of the game in the third quarter, using an 11-0 run to build a 39-27 advantage at the 4:32 mark. Deshka Olson buried a triple during the run, while Ashley Greenwood added a pair of free throws and a layup.

Dixie State maintained the 11-point lead into the final frame, as Chesney Stevens took over, scoring 10 consecutive points for the Trailblazers. Stevens nailed a 3-pointer for the final DSU basket of the third quarter, then scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, including another triple. Following a Madi Loftus layup at the 6:48 mark, Dixie State had extended the lead to 54-34.

But the Roadrunners refused to go away, countering with a 20-5 run over the next six minutes to trim the DSU lead to 59-54 with 20 seconds to play. After a Trailblazer timeout, Loftus drew a foul and iced the game with a pair of free throws to push the lead to the final tally of 61-54.

Loftus led the charge for Dixie State, scoring a season-high 21 points, including 12 points in the first half, on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. Stevens post her fourth double-digit scoring performance of the year, finishing with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.   After narrowly missing a triple-double on Saturday, London Pavlica filled up the stat sheet again, adding eight points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

As a team, Dixie State shot 39 percent (22-of-56) from the field, 31 percent (7-of-22) from 3-point range, and 76 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line.

The Trailblazers now make a five-hour trek north to Chadron, Nebraska, for a Saturday evening matchup against Chadron State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
