Trailblazers fall at Fort Lewis Friday, 65-56

The Dixie State women's basketball team closed the month of January on a sour note on Friday, suffering its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road loss of the season, a 65-56 decision at the hands of Fort Lewis inside Whalen Gymnasium in Durango, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (13-7, 8-6 RMAC) took an early 5-2 lead when Chesney Stevens buried a triple. However, Fort Lewis responded with a 15-4 run over the next six minutes to build a 17-9 advantage at the 1:44 mark of the first quarter.

Dixie State countered with an 11-2 run stretching into the early minutes of the second quarter to retake a 20-19 lead at the 7:37 mark. Five different Trailblazers scored during the run, including a 3-pointer by Madi Loftus to push DSU in front. But the home squad fought back again, this time with a 13-4 run to take a 32-24 halftime lead.

The Skyhawks stretched the lead to as many as 13 points in the third quarter at 41-28 before the Trailblazers came alive again. Ali Franks and Loftus sank back-to-back triples to spark a 10-1 run for DSU to trim the lead to 42-38 at the 3:06 mark. But that is as close as it would get.

Fort Lewis used a decisive 19-8 run over the next 12 minutes of game time to push the lead to 61-46 late in the fourth quarter. London Pavlica would later convert consecutive 3-pointers, while Makayla Johnson and Maggie McCord each recorded a layup to push the final tally to 65-56.

Dixie State shot 35 percent (22-of-62) from the field, 28 percent (8-of-28) from 3-point range, and 57 percent (4-of-7) from the free throw line. Franks posted a team-high 14 points, while Keslee Stevenson added 12 points. Stevens finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Pavlica added six points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

The Trailblazers close the weekend on Saturday at Adams State in Alamosa, Colorado. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
