Trailblazers take down Western Colorado Saturday, 68-54

The Dixie State women's basketball team claimed a 68-54 victory over third-ranked Western Colorado on Saturday in front of a record crowd inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazer women saw the largest crowd of the NCAA Division II era pour into the Burns Arena, as 2,139 fans packed the seats, marking the first time a DSU women's basketball game has had a crowd of 2,000 or more. And they did not leave disappointed.

Dixie State (13-6, 8-5 RMAC) raced to a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Western Colorado scored on the first possession of the game, but wouldn't convert another field goal attempt for over eight minutes. Meanwhile, DSU used a 21-5 run to take a 16-point advantage into the second quarter. Ali Franks keyed the run with eight points, while London Pavlica and Madi Loftus added five points each.

The Trailblazers extended the run into the second quarter, pushing the lead to 29 points at 43-14 at the 2:31 mark. WCU countered with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 43-23 at halftime. DSU connected on four triples during the period, including two from Keslee Stevenson. Pavlica scored seven points during the frame, while dishing out four assists.

The home squad saw its lead cut to 43-30 four minutes into the third quarter after the Mountaineers converted seven consecutive free throws. Stevenson stopped the run with another triple, sparking an 11-2 run to push the lead back to 54-32 heading to the final quarter. The DSU defense also clamped down, holding the visitors without a field goal during the period.

The Mountaineers used an 11-4 run midway through the fourth quarter to trim the lead to 62-50, but the Trailblazers iced the game away with six free throws down the stretch to preserve the 68-54 victory.

Dixie State shot 50 percent (21-of-42) from the field, 57 percent (8-of-14) from 3-point range, and 78 percent (18-of-23) from the free throw line. Franks led three DSU players in double figures with 18 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Pavlica posted her second consecutive double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists. Loftus added 12 points.

The Trailblazers now embark on a four-game road swing, traveling first to Fort Lewis and Adams State next week.
