Trailblazers drop hard-fought decision to No. 22 Colorado Mesa Friday, 59-51

Dixie State women's basketball dropped a hard-fought decision to No. 22 Colorado Mesa on Friday, falling 59-51 inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (12-6, 7-5 RMAC) faced a tough challenge in a matchup against the nation's top scoring defense. But the home squad found itself in a position to win after a 7-0 run, including five straight points by Chesney Stevens, pulled DSU to within 49-47 at the midway point of the fourth quarter.

The Mavericks responded with four straight points before Keslee Stevenson converted a pair of free throws to trim the CMU lead to 53-49 with four minutes remaining. And there the score remained for nearly three minutes, as the Trailblazers came away empty-handed on four consecutive possessions.

Colorado Mesa ended the scoreless stretch with a pair of free throws at the 1:22 mark, but the Trailblazers would only score once more. Meanwhile, the Mavericks iced the game away with free throws to clinch the 59-51 win.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, Dixie State used a 13-2 run late in the second quarter to take its only lead of the game at 32-30. With less than a minute until halftime, it appeared the Trailblazers would take the momentum into the break. However, CMU guard Daniella Turner sank a 3-pointer to give the Mavericks a 33-32 lead at the intermission.

The nation's No.1 scoring defense then went to work in the third quarter, holding DSU to just eight points and two field goals during the frame. CMU pushed its lead to 48-40, setting the stage for the fourth quarter and DSU's final push.

Dixie State shot 30 percent (16-of-53) from the field, 19 percent (5-of-26) from beyond the arc, and 82 percent (14-of-17) from the free throw line. Madi Loftus led three DSU players in double figures with 12 points, while London Pavlica added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Stevens finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Trailblazers close their four-game homestand on Saturday against Western Colorado. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
