Ali Franks joins 1,000-point club as Trailblazers fall to Regis Saturday, 77-68

Dixie State senior guard Ali Franks made history on Saturday, becoming just the fourth player in DSU women's basketball history to join the 1,000-point club, as the Trailblazers dropped a 77-68 decision to Regis inside the Burns Arena.

Franks scored 26 points, including a season-high six pointers, but it was her final basket of the night that made history. With four and half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Franks took a pass from Madi Loftus, then drove to the basket on the left side and scored off the backboard to push her career point total to 1,001 points.

The historic basket pulled Dixie State (12-5, 7-4 RMAC) to within four points at 61-57, and after a Loftus triple, DSU was within one possession at 63-60. However, the Trailblazers were unable to complete their second consecutive comeback victory, as Regis closed the game on a decisive 14-8 run to seal the win.

Dixie State raced to a 7-2 lead early in the first quarter, and later took a 17-14 lead when Franks nailed her second 3-pointer, but the Rangers quickly regained the lead and would not relinquish its advantage for the remainder of the game.

The Trailblazers would cut the lead to 38-36 early in the third quarter, but Regis forward Jaz'Myne Snipes answered with back-to-back triples to keep the visitors in front. On a night that saw the DSU defense limit the Rangers' leading scorer to just five points, Snipes picked up the slack, finishing with 25 points to keep DSU at bay.
Franks led the DSU attack with her game-high 26 points, while Loftus added 18 points and five rebounds. Chesney Stevens finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while London Pavlica chipped in eight points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists.

Dixie State shot 39 percent (24-of-61) from the field, 42 percent (11-of-26) from 3-point range, and 69 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line.

The Trailblazers will close their four-game homestand next week, hosting RMAC-leader Colorado Mesa on Friday and third-place Western Colorado on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
