Trailblazers grind out road win at Chadron State Saturday, 80-73

Madi Loftus scored a career-high 31 points on Saturday to propel Dixie State women's basketball to an 80-73 road victory over Chadron State inside the Chicoine Events Center in Chadron, Nebraska.

Loftus connected on 10-of-17 shots from the field, including a career-best six triples, to post DSU's first 30-point scoring performance since the 2014-15 season. The Trailblazers (11-4, 6-3 RMAC) also recorded their sixth victory in their last seven outings with the win.

The first quarter was a tale of two halves, as Dixie State raced to a 14-6 lead over the first five minutes of the opening frame. Keslee Stevenson nailed a triple on the first shot attempt of the game and added a layup, while Loftus chipped in four points during the run.

But Chadron State answered over the final five minutes of the quarter with a 13-6 stretch to take a 21-20 lead with less than thirty seconds remaining. Ashley Greenwood converted a layup with five seconds left to give DSU a 22-21 advantage after the opening frame.

The Trailblazers pushed the lead to a game-high mark of 13 points at 34-21 at the 7:24 mark of the second quarter after a Loftus jumper. The teams went back-and-forth through the rest of the period, and DSU took a 46-36 lead into the halftime break. Loftus scored 13 points during the frame, while Breaunna Gillen added five points.

The Eagles surged in the early part of the third quarter, trimming the DSU lead to 54-50, but Gillen and Deshka Olson posted back-to-back buckets for the Trailblazers to push the lead back to nine points. Both teams would add two more baskets before the final whistle of the period to run the score to 61-54 in favor of the visitors.

After sitting out almost the entire third quarter due to foul trouble, Loftus scored 11 points, including two critical 3-pointers, during the fourth quarter to help survive a late CSC rally that saw the Eagles pull to within one point on two different occasions. But both times, Loftus was there to answer with a triple to keep DSU in front. Loftus would then ice the game with three free throws down the stretch to seal the 80-73 victory.

Dixie State shot 45 percent (30-of-66) from the field, 26 percent (8-of-30) from 3-point range, and 70 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line. Additionally, the Trailblazers set a single-game program record with just four turnovers.

Loftus led the way with her career-high 31 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. London Pavlica added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Stevenson finished with nine points and three assists.

The Trailblazers return to the Burns Arena for a four-game homestand, beginning next week with games against Colorado Christian on Friday and Regis on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
