Trailblazers Swept by St. Cloud State in Season Opener Thursday


Dixie State volleyball opened its 2019 season on a sour note as the Trailblazers dropped the first game of the DSU-hosted Desert Garden Inn by Wyndham Classic to visiting St. Cloud State in a 3-0 sweep Thursday night inside the Burns Arena.

SCSU (1-0) bolted out to an 11-3 lead to open the match, and although the Trailblazers (0-1) pulled to within three points on a couple of occasions, the deficit proved to be too great as the Huskies took the first set by a 25-20 count. Dixie State scored the first three points of the second frame, but SCSU pulled even at 8-8, then broke a 15-15 deadlock with a 10-2 run en route to a 25-17 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

St. Cloud State never trailed the decisive third set, though the Blazers threatened to extend the match after a Megan Treanor kill pulled DSU even at 22-22. However the Huskies took advantage of two late DSU errors as they scored the final three points of the night to close out the win.

Dixie State was held to a .156 attack percentage and 31 kills in the three sets, while SCSU hit .224 with 48 kills. Sydney Johnson led DSU with nine kills offensively, while Lauren Gammell collected six kills and one block, and Treanor and Sai Collins had five kills apiece.

The Trailblazers continue tournament play Friday with two matches, the first coming against Simon Fraser at 11 a.m., followed by a date vs. Stanislaus State at 7 p.m.
