Trailblazers battle for third straight road win Saturday, 28-16

Dixie State football battled to its third consecutive road victory on Saturday, outlasting South Dakota Mines for a 28-16 win at O'Harra Stadium in Rapid City, South Dakota.

The Trailblazers (3-1, 3-1 RMAC) overcame a halftime deficit for the second time in three games, fighting through wet and windy conditions to complete the longest road stretch since 2009 in winning fashion.

"I'm proud of how our guys have battled through these road games," head coach Paul Peterson said. "They've had to work through adversity to get the results. It has helped and will continue to help us learn how we can be better each week."

The DSU defense continued to impress, holding the Hardrockers to just 16 points for its third consecutive game allowing less than 20 points. The Trailblazers wreaked havoc in the SD Mines backfield, finishing with seven sacks, including a new single-game record 4.5 sacks for Dylan Hendrickson. Aaron Simpson recorded both Dixie State takeaways, snagging a pair of interceptions in the first quarter.

James Baird recorded the lone DSU points of the first half, nailing a 35-yard field goal straight into the wind in the first quarter and a 40-yard field in the second quarter to give the Trailblazers a 6-0 lead.

South Dakota Mines countered with 10 unanswered points, a 39-yard field goal and a 2-yard touchdown run, to take a 10-6 lead into the halftime break.
Facing a halftime deficit for the second time in three weeks, the DSU offense rose to the occasion, racking up 298 yards and 22 points over the final two quarters to close the game with 461 yards of total offense.

After the teams traded punts to open the third quarter, the Trailblazers put together a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive to retake a 13-10 lead. DSU delivered a steady dose of pass and run on the drive, as Keaton Mott completed four passes for 57 yards, including two 19-yard darts to Malcolm Ross-Turner, while combining with Sei-J Lauago for 23 yards on the ground. Mott fired a 12-yard touchdown strike to Dejuan Dantzler to cap the drive.

Two drives later, Mott connected with Dantzler again, this time for a 61-yard touchdown to push the lead to 20-10 early in the fourth quarter.

The Hardrockers responded on the ensuing drive, marching 75 yards in seven plays for a touchdown. With the lead cut to 20-16, the home team appeared to regain control and seize the momentum. But Dixie State blocked the point-after attempt, and Simote Lokotui returned the loose ball 100 yards for DSU's first defensive extra point since 2012 to push the lead to 22-16.

The Trailblazers closed the scoring on the next drive when D'Arman Notoa scampered to the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown to push the lead to 28-16.

South Dakota Mines drove into DSU territory on the ensuing possession, but would not score as the DSU defense recorded back-to-back sacks and a quarterback hurry to force the game-sealing turnover-on-downs.

Mott completed 21-of-38 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns. Dantzler finished with a team-high four catches for 112 yards and two touchdowns, while Ross-Turner added five catches for 72 yards. DSU finished with 161 yards rushing, led by Lauago with 48 yards on 16 attempts.

Defensively, the Trailblazers allowed 351 yards of total offense. Syrr Barnes led the way with a team-high 16 tackles, just three tackles away from tying the DSU single-game tackle record. Hendrickson added a career-high 12 tackles to go with the record-setting 4.5 sacks.

The Trailblazers return to St. George to host Black Hills State on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
