Trailblazers rout Black Hills State Saturday, 52-22

DSU pushes win streak to four games

The Dixie State football team earned its first home win of the season in impressive fashion on Saturday, rolling to a 52-22 rout over Black Hills State inside Trailblazer Stadium.

The Trailblazers (4-1, 4-1 RMAC) racked up 677 yards of total offense, just five yards shy of tying the DSU single-game record, including a potent air raid attack from start to finish. Keaton Mott and Kody Wilstead combined to complete 30-of-38 passes for 473 yards and five total touchdowns through the air, both season-high marks. In all, the DSU quarterbacks completed passes to 11 different Trailblazers in the victory.

"The offense is designed to get the ball to as many guys as we can and take what the defense gives us," head coach Paul Peterson said. "I'm proud of both of our quarterbacks. We're better offensively when they're both clicking. Our receivers were also ready today and made plays when opportunities came their way."

The win marked DSU's fourth consecutive victory, matching the longest win streak of the program's NCAA Division II era.

After the Yellow Jackets converted a 29-yard field goal on the game's opening drive, Mott quickly drove the Trailblazers into BHSU territory, where James Baird tied the game at 3-3 with 30-yard field goal.

Dixie State took a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter when Mott connected with Chase Hess across the middle for a 32-yard catch-and-run touchdown that saw Hess break multiple tackles on his way to the end zone. Mott threw for 74 yards on the drive, tossing to Xavier Smith for 17 yards and another 25-yard completion to Hess.

The DSU defense then forced a BHSU three-and-out on the ensuing drive, and Mott and the Trailblazer offense again went to work, marching into Yellow Jacket territory. Kody Wilstead entered the game for the eighth play of the drive after an injury forced Mott to the sideline, and fired a 27-yard touchdown strike to Blake Kilgore on his first pass attempt of the afternoon to push the lead to 17-3.

BHSU answered with a 52-yard field that clanged off the crossbar and fell through on the ensuing drive, but the Trailblazer offense countered with a five-play, 65-yard drive to push the lead to 24-6. Wilstead tossed to Kasey Allison for a 49-yard catch-and-run completion early in the drive, setting up a 12-yard touchdown run for Wilstead to cap the drive.

The Yellow Jackets scored their first touchdown of the game on their next possession, taking advantage of two DSU personal-foul penalties to cut the lead to 24-13.

Unfazed, the DSU offense again marched down the field and matched the BHSU touchdown in less than 90 seconds. Wilstead opened the drive with a 33-yard strike to Jalen Powell, then closed the drive with a 28-yard dart to Allison in the left corner of the end zone to push the lead to 31-13 at halftime.

The Trailblazers picked up right where they left off in the second half, marching for a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on the opening possession of the third quarter. DSU used a healthy mix of pass and run on the drive, rushing for two first downs before Wilstead connected with Allison in the back of the end zone for a touchdown to push the lead to 38-13.

The DSU defense forced another BHSU three-and-out on the next drive, and again the offense followed suit, moving 69 yards in eight plays to extend the lead to 45-13. Andrew Kannely-Robles rushed for 23 yards early in the drive, setting up a 31-yard pass to Xavier Smith. Sei-J Lauago carried the ball on the next three plays, including a 4-yard touchdown run.

Dixie State forced another BHSU punt after the scoring drive, but conceded a safety on the ensuing possession with a holding penalty inside its own end zone to trim the lead to 45-15.

The Trailblazers opened the fourth quarter the same way they opened the third, driving 75 yards in 10 plays to score its final touchdown of the game. Wilstead logged 74 passing yards on the drive, including a 29-yard touchdown toss to Hess, whose second touchdown catch of the game pushed the lead to 52-22.

The Yellow Jackets countered on their next drive, capping a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to push the score to the final tally of 52-22.

Wilstead led the DSU offensive explosion, completing 18-of-23 passes for 336 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for another 50 yards and one touchdown. Mott completed 12-of-15 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown. Allison led all DSU receivers with 126 yards and two touchdowns on four catches, while Hess added 107 yards and two touchdowns on four catches.

The Trailblazers grinded out 204 rushing yards, led by Kannely-Robles with 67 yards on 13 carries. Lauago added 33 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Trailblazers held BHSU under 300 yards of total offense for most of the game, until the Yellow Jackets' final scoring drive pushed their final total to 354 yards. Conner McKay finished with a career-high 10 tackles and one solo sack to lead the defense, while Alex Lilliard added nine tackles and one sack. Darrius Nash finished with six tackles and two pass breakups.

The Trailblazers will take a break from conference play next week, hosting former Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Simon Fraser on Saturday at 7 p.m.
