Dixie State opened its final season of RMAC play with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against in-state rival Westminster College Sunday afternoon at Trailblazer Stadium.
The two sides battled back and forth to a stalemate through the first 52-plus minutes of play until
Whitley Johns got the Trailblazers (2-1-2/0-0-1 RMAC) on the scoreboard with her second goal of the season.
Zoe Clark played a ball in from the right wing Johns, who fired home a 15-yard shot from the right hash to give her side the one-goal advantage.
Westminster (3-0-2/0-0-1 RMAC) would counter with the equalizer in the 67
th-minute when DSU was called for a foul just outside of the Blazers' 18-yard box. On the ensuing Griffin free kick, Sarah Reiber rocketed a ball that caromed off the right post to teammate Brynnae Braun, who chipped in the point-blank rebound to square the match at 1-1.
In the first overtime session, Johns created a quick chance just 30 seconds into play, but her close range shot was stopped by Griffin keeper Hillary Weixler. Then with 2:46 to play in the frame, Jayde Hansen blasted a straight-on shot that was punched away by a sprawling
Chandler Greenwood to keep the match deadlocked. Both teams would play through a shot-less second overtime period and settled for a point apiece in the RMAC table.
Johns accounted for four of DSU's nine shots in the match, while Greenwood was credited with a career-high eight saves for the Blazers defensively.Â
Dixie State continues its homestand this Friday night with an RMAC match against Regis beginning at 7:30 p.m.
