Dixie State suffered its first loss of the young season by a 2-0 count at former Pacific West Conference rival Point Loma Thursday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.
After both sides battled back-and-forth through a scoreless first half, the Trailblazers dodged a big bullet in the when PLNU's Julia Glaser had a chance stopped by DSU netminder
Chandler Greenwood in the 53
rd-minute, and had another a scoring touch bound just wide of the lower right post. Dixie State also had a look to break through later in the stanza when
Breesa Nawahine booted a shot that sailed wide late in the 63
rd-minute.
Then in the 75
th-minute of play, Dixie State was called for a foul inside the PLNU penalty area, which awarded the Sea Lions a penalty kick. Glaser was called upon for the attempt and she tucked home the chance to give her side a one-goal lead. Point Loma would strike for an insurance goal nearly three minutes later, and the Sea Lion defense limited the Blazers to just one shot attempt over the final 12:55 of the match to post the clean sheet.
Dixie State was outshot 21-6 in the match, including an 8-2 edge on goal. Greenwood (L, 2-1) was credited with five saves in a losing effort.
DSU continues its southern California road swing this Saturday as the Trailblazers travel north on the I-5 to Irvine for a date at former PacWest foe Concordia-Irvine. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. (MT).
