Dixie State came away with a 1-1 draw in an exhibition friendly at Division-I foe Idaho State Friday afternoon at Davis Field.
The Trailblazers had a couple of early looks to break through in the opening 10 minutes of play as
Whitley Johns and
Kilee Allsop got their boots on scoring chances, but both were turned away by Bengal keeper Katie Hogarth. Then midway through the stanza,
Sophie Stewart and
Kelsey Cook each had opportunities to get DSU on the board, but each of their shots bounded just wide left.
Idaho State (0-2-1) looked to counter in the 37
th-minute when Makena Bambei got loose for a breakaway run against DSU netminder
Chandler Greenwood, but the sophomore goalie was up to the challenge as she stopped Bambei with a point-blank save to keep the game scoreless. However the Bengals would find the back of the net with just one second left in the frame when Karlin Wurlitzer sent a corner kick into the middle of the 8-yard box, where it was corralled and tucked home by Lauren McGahie to give her side a 1-0 halftime lead.
Dixie State quickly struck for the equalizer just over two minutes into the second half when
Tess Donaldson scored on a
Victoria Bravo feed to knot the match at 1-1. Stewart then had a great look to give the Blazers their first lead late in the 73
rd-minute, but Hogarth would make the save to keep the score deadlocked.
The Trailblazers put together two more dangerous chances with four-plus minutes to play in regulation as DSU broke away for a 2-v-1 rush, but a Bravo flick sailed wide right. Then with 48 seconds to go, Johns fired off a shot that was heading toward the lower right corner of the frame, but Hogarth again stopped the chance to preserve the tie in regulation.
DSU's stout defense held Idaho State without a shot attempt in both overtime periods, while the Trailblazers were credited with four shot attempts, one on frame, but they could not come up with the golden goal.
Dixie State outshot ISU 22-13, which included a 14-5 edge after halftime, though both sides were credited with seven shots on frame. Johns paced the DSU offense with five shots, three on goal, while Stewart was credited with four attempts. Greenwood finished with five saves on the afternoon.
Dixie State officially opens the 2019 regular season against Cal State San Bernardino on the pitch at Trailblazer Stadium this upcoming Thursday night, Sept. 5. Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
