Trailblazers drop South Central Regional opener Thursday, 3-0

The No. 7 seed Dixie State softball team dropped a 3-0 decision in its NCAA Division II South Central Regional opener on Thursday, falling to No. 2 Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce, Texas.

Both pitchers set the tone for what would end up as a pitcher's duel in the first inning. After Texas A&M-Commerce struck out the DSU side in the top of the first, Cambrie Hazel responded by doing the same in the bottom of the frame.

The Trailblazers (42-12) saw their best chance to break through in the top of the third, loading the bases with two outs, but a Kasey Crawford line drive to the center field was snared on a running catch to end the inning and the threat.

The Lions took advantage of a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases in the bottom of the third, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to foul territory in left field. Brenna Cornwall fought off the persistent wind to make the catch, but was too deep to prevent the runner from third from scoring.

TAMUC added a home run in the fourth inning, and another sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, to push the score to the final tally of 3-0. Meanwhile, Dixie State was unable to take advantage of a Cornwall single in the fifth and a Mikaela Thomson single in the sixth, leaving both runners stranded.

Cornwall, Thomson, and Bailey Gaffin managed the only three hits for DSU, while Hazel (18-7) tossed a complete-game one-hitter in the loss with nine strikeouts.
Dixie State will now look to play its way back to Championship Saturday and will need two victories on Friday to stay alive. The Trailblazers will open the day against No. 6 Cameron at 2:30 p.m. Central Time (1:30 p.m. MT).
