Trailblazers season ends with 5-4 loss to Cameron

Dixie State closes year with 42-13 record

The 2019 Dixie State softball season came to a close on Friday with a 5-4 loss to Cameron in the elimination round of the NCAA Division II South Central 2 Regional in Commerce, Texas.

After combining for just four total hits in Thursday's game, Friday's game was in stark contrast, as the Trailblazers and Aggies combined for 22 hits while both squads battled to stay alive.

Cameron took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a pair of back-to-back singles.

The Trailblazers (42-13) countered with two runs to take a 2-1 advantage. Bailey Gaffin started things off with an infield single to shortstop, then moved to third when Jessica Gonzalez doubled to right center. Gaffin scored on the next play when Mikaela Thomson picked up an RBI on a groundout to shortstop. Kasey Crawford then gave DSU the lead with an RBI-single to center field.

Dixie State tacked on another run in the bottom of the second. Dani Bartholf, Taylor Godfrey, and Brenna Cornwall each singled to load the bases with one out. Gaffin then drove a single to right field to score Bartholf and push the lead to 3-1. But the lead didn't last long.

The Aggies tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third, posting three hits and taking advantage of two DSU errors to level the score. Cameron took the lead in the fifth inning, pushing across two more runs on three hits to build a 5-3 advantage. Meanwhile, DSU managed just one base runner throughout the middle innings.

Facing elimination, the Trailblazers put together one final rally in the bottom of the seventh. Kaitlyn Delange started the frame with a one-out single up the middle, then moved to second when Cornwall singled down the left field line.

Both runners then advanced one base on a passed ball. Two batters later, Delange scored from third when Gonzalez scorched a single to third base to cut the lead to 5-4. But the comeback fell short on the next play, when Cameron tossed a ground ball from shortstop to third base for the force out to end the game.

Gaffin, Godfrey, and Gonzalez each finished with two hits to lead DSU at the plate. Carissa Burgess (L, 23-5) and Cambrie Hazel split time in the pitcher's circle, finishing with two strikeouts each.

The Trailblazers close the 2019 season with a 42-13 overall record, marking the sixth time in the last seven years DSU has recorded at least 40 wins. Additionally, Dixie State claimed its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament championship and qualified for its 11th consecutive NCAA Regional.
