Trailblazers split on final day of RMAC pod series

The Dixie State softball team split the final two games of its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series on Sunday at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (26-9, 20-8 RMAC) opened the day with a 3-1 loss to MSU Denver, before bouncing back with a 5-3 win over Black Hills State.

GAME ONE – MSU Denver 3, Dixie State 1

Dixie State quickly built a 1-0 lead in the opener against MSU Denver when Jessica Gonzalez blasted a solo home run down the left field line.

The one-run advantage would hold until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Roadrunners scored three runs on five hits to take a 3-1 lead.

The Trailblazers put one runner on base in both the sixth and seventh inning, but couldn't bring them around the bases, and MSU Denver sealed the win.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 5, Black Hills State 3

Like the first game, Dixie State would strike first in the afternoon contest against Black Hills State. After a BHSU error, Bailey Gaffin singled up the middle in the top of the first to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead.

The Trailblazers countered, scoring one run in each of the next three innings to build a 4-2 advantage. After a Taylor Godfrey triple, Kasey Crawford drove an RBI-single to left center in the second inning. Kaitlyn Delange belted a double to right field in the third inning, then scored on the play after a BHSU throwing error. Godfrey scored in the fourth inning when Brenna Cornwall singled to center field.

Dixie State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Kori Gahn opened the frame with a leadoff double. Ashley Jones entered as a pinch runner and scored on the next play on a BHSU throwing error to push the lead to 5-2.

Black Hills State pulled one run back in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, but wouldn't get any closer. DSU recorded the final two outs to seal the 5-3 win.

Gaffin finished with a team-high two hits, while Cambrie Hazel earned the win to improve to improve to 11-4 in the pitcher's circle. Hazel allowed one run and struck out six after entering in the fourth inning.

The Trailblazers will continue their eight-game road swing next weekend with a four-game RMAC series at Chadron State in Chadron, Nebraska.
