Softball splits Saturday DH at Chadron State

Dixie State softball split its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Chadron, Nebraska, dropping a 12-4 decision in the opener before closing the day with a 10-4 win.

GAME ONE – Chadron State 12, Dixie State 4 (5 innings)

Dixie State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the series opener. Mikaela Thomson plated the first run with an RBI-double to right field, while Kaitlyn Delange picked up a 2-RBI single and Brenna Cornwall drove home a run. But the lead wouldn't last.

Chadron State responded with 12 unanswered runs to close the game in five innings. The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the second, followed by five runs in both the third and fourth inning.

GAME TWO –  Dixie State 10, Chadron State 4

The Trailblazers built a 3-0 lead after two innings in the second game. Jessica Gonzalez, Kori Gahn, and Bailey Gaffin each recorded a RBI hit through the first two frames to build the advantage. DSU added a run in the fourth inning when Gaffin picked up her second RBI of the game. But like the opener, the lead wouldn't last.

The Eagles scored one run in the third inning and three more in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. However, this time the Trailblazers answered, scoring in each of the final three innings.

Thomson gave DSU the lead back with one swing of the bat in the fifth inning, belting a two-run home run. Thomson and Gahn each tacked on another RBI in the sixth inning.  Kasey Crawford scored on a passed ball in the seventh, while Delange plated a run later in the frame to push the score to the final tally of 10-4.

Thomson led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and 3 RBI. Carissa Burgess picked up the win to improve to 15-4 in the circle, striking out a career-high six CSC batters along the way.

Dixie State and Chadron State will close the series with a second doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m.
