Jayden Murray picked up his seventh win of the season and
Brody Clifford drove in four runs as Dixie State opened its eight-game RMAC road swing with an 11-7 victory over Colorado School of Mines Friday night at Jim Darden Field.
Mines drew first blood on the second pitch of the game when Trevor Kehe homered off of Murray to give the Orediggers a quick 1-0 lead. The Trailblazers (23-8/13-4 RMAC) managed to get that run back, and more, as Dixie State rallied for three runs in the second inning and plated two more runs in each of the next two frames to vault to a 7-2 advantage.
DSU loaded the bases to open the second thanks to consecutive singles from
Tyson Fisher and
Jake Brown, followed by a
Kaid Urban walk.
Braxton Ipson got the Blazers on the board with a sharp single to left field, while
Bryce Feist flew out to the warning track in right field to drive home Brown with the second run.
Cade Spurlin then followed with a two-out single through the right side to push the Dixie lead to 3-1.
After CSM (19-9/10-7 RMAC) countered with a run in the second, Dixie State came back with two runs in the third, the first coming on an Urban two-out double, then Clifford doubled home two more after two outs in the fourth to extend the Trailblazer lead to five runs.
Meanwhile Murray (W, 7-2) retired eight Orediggers in a row after surrendering that second-inning run and limited Mines to just three runs and five hits with six strikeouts in five solid innings of work.
The Trailblazers rewarded Murray with three more runs in the sixth with another Clifford two-run double, then after a wild pitch, Clifford scampered home on an Urban single to push the lead to 10-3.
Lane Pritchard would cap DSU's night offensively with his second home run of the season, a lead-off blast right center to open the seventh.
Dixie State outhit Mines 16-13, with Fisher leading the way with three hits and two runs scored, while five other Trailblazers posted two-hit nights. Sophomore reliever
Brecken Lewis (S, 1) collected his first collegiate save as he struck out three and scattered three runs and six hits over the final three innings.
The two teams will continue their four-game series with a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday beginning 1 p.m.
