Trailblazers sweep Friday twinbill at Fort Lewis

Cambrie Hazel sets single-season strikeout record

The Dixie State softball team opened the weekend with a doubleheader sweep over Fort Lewis on Friday at Aspen Field in Durango, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (35-10, 29-9 RMAC) didn't score until the fourth inning in game one, and only scored three runs in the game. However, that was all the visitors would need as Cambrie Hazel mowed down 13 Fort Lewis batters to break the DSU single-season strikeout record with 186 strikeouts on the year. The Dixie State bats came alive in game two, and the Trailblazers cruised to an 11-1 win in five innings.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 3, Fort Lewis 0

Hazel set the tone for her record-breaking day early in the series-opener, striking out seven FLC batters over the first three innings.

The Trailblazers broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on four hits to build a 2-0 lead. After Dani Bartholf walked and Kasey Crawford singled, Taylor Godfrey scorched an infield-single to second base to score Bartholf from second. Mikaela Thomson then entered as a pinch-hitter and promptly singled through the left side to score Crawford.

Dixie State pushed the score to the final tally of 3-0 in the top of the fifth. Bailey Gaffin laced a leadoff single to right center field. Then, after two consecutive DSU outs, Kori Gahn smashed a triple to right field to allow Gaffin to score from first.

Bartholf, Gahn, and Godfrey each finished with a RBI to lead DSU at the plate, while Hazel (15-5) allowed just one hit and two base runners in her 13-strikeout, complete-game shutout win.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 11, Fort Lewis 1

Dixie State wasted no time taking the lead in game two, scoring two runs on two hits to take a 2-0 lead. The Trailblazers loaded the bases after Brenna Cornwall drew a hit-by-pitch, Jessica Gonzalez walked, and Gahn singled to center field. Three pitches later, Thomson picked up her second RBI of the day with a single to left field. Crawford drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning for the second run.

Fort Lewis countered with one run in the bottom of the first to cut the DSU lead in half. The Skyhawks used a leadoff double and sacrifice squeeze bunt later in the inning to score their only run of the day.

The Trailblazers tacked on one run in the second inning. Gaffin started things off with a double down the right field line, then scored when Gonzalez singled to center field.

Dixie State sealed the win in the third and fourth innings, scoring four runs in each frame to push the lead to the final tally of 11-1. The visitors belted out eight hits during the stretch and got 2-RBI hits from Kaitlyn Delange, Cornwall, and Bartholf, while Crawford and Emma Sweet each picked up a single RBI.

Bartholf, Gahn, and Gonzalez led DSU at the plate with two hits each in game two. Carissa Burgess (19-4) tossed a two-hit gem, allowing just one hit to go with six strikeouts to pick up the win in the pitcher's circle.

Dixie State and Fort Lewis will wrap up the four-game series with a second doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m.
