Trailblazers sweep Fort Lewis in regular season finale

The Dixie State softball team closed the 2019 regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Fort Lewis at Aspen Field in Durango, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (37-10, 31-9 RMAC) got a two-run home run from Jessica Gonzalez in a 4-0 win in game one, before outlasting the Skyhawks for a 1-0 victory in game two to clinch the series sweep.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 4, Fort Lewis 0

The Trailblazers quickly built a lead in game one, taking a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first. Bailey Gaffin singled to center field, then stole second. Four pitches later, Gonzalez crushed her 11th home run of the season over the fence in left field to stake DSU to an early lead.

Dixie State added to the lead in the third and sixth innings. Kaitlyn Delange double down the right field line in the third, then scored when Gaffin doubled to right center field. In the sixth, Kasey Crawford plated the final run of the game with an RBI-single to center field.

Gaffin led DSU at the plate, posting a perfect 3-for-3 performance with an RBI. Cambrie Hazel improved to 16-5 in the pitcher's circle with six strikeouts in the complete-game win.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 1, Fort Lewis 0

Dixie State needed just one run to complete the series sweep in the series finale. Mikaela Thomson singled to left field to lead off the second inning, then scored when Crawford singled to center field.

From there, the game turned into a pitcher's duel as neither team managed more than one base runner in an inning until Fort Lewis stranded two base runners in the sixth inning.

Six different Trailblazers recorded a hit in the finale, while Carissa Burgess allowed just two hits with three strikeouts en route to her 20th win of the season.

Dixie State wraps up the regular season with a 37-10 overall record and a 31-9 mark in RMAC play. The Trailblazers will enter next week's conference tournament as the No. 3 seed and will take on No. 6 UC-Colorado Spring in the first round on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in Grand Junction, Colorado.
