Trailblazers Split Friday Doubleheader with Regis

Dixie State came away with a split of the middle two games of its RMAC series vs. Regis Friday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. Cade Spurlin tied a career-high with five RBI to help the Trailblazers rally for a 7-6 win in the first seven-inning game, while DSU could not capitalize on late scoring chances in dropping the nightcap in eight innings, 8-5.

Trailing 6-2 in the fifth inning of game one, Spurlin collected his second RBI of the game with a opposite field double to left that trimmed the Regis lead down to 6-3. Dixie State (27-14/17-10 RMAC) then struck for four more runs in the home sixth, with the big blow coming from Spurlin, who stepped up with the bases loaded and delivered a clutch two-out double down the right field line to clear the bases and give DSU its first lead of the day at 7-6.

Senior righthander Jayden Murray (W, 8-2), who made his 11th start of the season, would go on to strike out the side in the seventh to post his second complete-game victory. Murray struck out eight while scattering seven hits and six runs (five earned) to win for the eighth time overall.

After giving up three first-inning runs in the nightcap, the Trailblazers battled back to tie the game at 3-3 through three innings complete. DSU plated its first two runs without benefit of a hit in the second inning as the Blazers took advantage of two Ranger errors, while Tyler Hollow cashed in another Regis (13-27/8-19 RMAC) miscue in the third with an RBI-single to draw DSU even.

Regis quickly regained the lead at 4-3 with a run in the fourth, but Dixie State counter-punched with two more runs in the home fifth to take a 5-4 advantage. Spurlin reached on his third double of the day to lead off the stanza, then after a Tyson Fisher single, Hollow drove in Spurlin carrying the tying run. Alec Flemetakis then stepped up to give the Blazers the lead five pitches later with a sharp single up the middle.

However Dixie State could not protect its slim advantage as the Rangers took advantage of a costly DSU error to knot the score at 5-5 in the sixth. The Trailblazers had a chance to take the lead in the home half of the frame with runners on the corners and one out, but Ranger reliever Jordan Wyke (W, 1-2) induced an inning-ending double play to end the threat.

Dixie State then had an opportunity to walk off with a win in the home seventh as the Blazers loaded the bases with two outs, but again Wyke would wiggle off the hook to keep the game deadlocked at 5-5. Regis would go on to plate three runs in the eighth and Wyke retired DSU in order in the bottom of the stanza to close out the game.

The Trailblazers will look to clinch a series win as the two teams wrap up their four-game set Saturday at 12 noon.
