Trailblazers sweep Sunday twinbill at Chadron State

Dixie State softball clinched a series victory over Chadron State with a doubleheader sweep over the Eagles on Sunday in Chadron, Nebraska.
 
The Trailblazers (29-10, 23-9 RMAC) got a sacrifice fly by Riley Tyteca in the fifth inning of the opener to claim a 2-1 win, then held off a late Chadron State rally in the series finale to pick up an 8-6 victory and clinch the series win.  
 
GAME ONE – Dixie State 2, Chadron State 1
 
Dixie State built a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the opener. Brenna Cornwall drew a leadoff walk, then scored when Tyteca singled to center field.
 
Chadron State evened the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
The Trailblazers took the lead for good in the top of the fifth when Bailey Gaffin scored on a Tyteca sacrifice fly to left field. From there, the DSU defense took over as Cambrie Hazel struck out five CSC batters over the final three innings.
 
Taylor Godfrey led the way with two hits in game one, while Tyteca finished with both RBI. Hazel tossed a complete-game gem to improve to 12-5 in the pitcher's circle, allowing three hits with seven strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO – Dixie State 8, Chadron State 6
 
The Trailblazers raced to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the series finale with two different two-run home runs. Cornwall drew a leadoff walk, then scored when Jessica Gonzalez belted her ninth home run of the season. Mikaela Thomson reached safely on an infield single, then scored when Tyteca blasted her second home run of the season.
 
Dixie State added two more runs on another two-run home run in the top of the fourth. Kaitlyn Delange reached on a fielder's choice, then scored when Gaffin crushed her second home run of the season to push the lead to 6-0. The Trailblazers extended the lead to 7-0 when Thomson scored from third on a double-steal attempt.
 
Chadron State erupted for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to cut the DSU lead to 7-6.
 
The Trailblazers pulled one run back in the top of the sixth when Gaffin scored Dani Bartholf from third to push the lead to the final tally of 8-6.
 
Tyteca led DSU at the plate in the finale with three hits and 2 RBI, while Carissa Burgess picked up the win to improve to 16-4 in the pitcher's circle. Hazel earned her first save of the season, striking out four CSC batters after entering in the sixth inning.
 
Dixie State now returns to Karl Brooks Field to host New Mexico Highlands in the 2019 home finale on Friday and Saturday.
