Trailblazers sweep Regis in Saturday twinbill

Dixie State softball opened a four-game series against Regis on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over the Rangers at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (21-8, 15-7 RMAC) got a two-run double from Dani Bartholf in the second inning in game one, while Cambrie Hazel mowed down the Regis batters with a career-high 15 strikeouts to clinch the 2-0 win. The Dixie State bats came alive in game two, as the Trailblazers earned an 8-0 win in five innings.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 2, Regis 0

Dixie State scored the only runs of the opener in the bottom of the second. Jessica Gonzalez and Riley Tyteca opened the frame with back-to-back singles and advanced after a Kori Gahn sacrifice bunt. After a DSU strikeout, Bartholf made sure the Trailblazers wouldn't come away empty handed, belting a two-run double to left field to stake DSU to the 2-0 lead.

The two runs proved to be all DSU would need. Hazel recorded at least two strikeouts in each of the first five innings, and struck out the Regis side three times. Hazel (8-4) allowed just one hit in the complete-game shutout, and would finish the game with a career-high 15 strikeouts, just one shy of tying the DSU single-game record.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 8, Regis 0 (5 innings)

The Trailblazers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Kasey Crawford opened the frame with an infield single to shortstop, then stole second. After Brenna Cornwall and Gonzalez each drew a walk, Tyteca drove a two-run double down the right field line to open the scoring. Gonzalez later scored on a wild pitch for the third run of the frame.

DSU scored in each of the remaining four innings. Bartholf scored on a wild pitch in the second inning, while Gahn drove a sacrifice fly to right field to push the lead to 5-0 in the third.

The highlight of the game came in the bottom of the fourth. After consecutive DSU groundouts to open the inning, Cornwall doubled to center field, bringing Bailey Gaffin to the plate. Gaffin laced the first pitch to left field, then raced around the bases for a two-run, inside-the-park home run after a diving attempt by the Regis outfielder was unsuccessful. The Trailblazers then took advantage of a Rangers errors in the bottom of the fifth to plate the final run and clinch the 8-0 win.

Cornwall and Tyteca each finished with two hits to lead DSU in game two, while Carissa Burges improved to 12-3 in the circle with four strikeouts in the shutout.

Dixie State and Regis will complete the four-game series with a second doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m.
