Trailblazers clinch series sweep Sunday with two wins over Regis

Dixie State softball clinched a series sweep over Regis on Sunday with two wins over the Rangers at Karl Brooks Field.
 
The Trailblazers (23-8, 17-7 RMAC) fired on all cylinders in the opener, using 11 hits to cruise to a 9-0 win. Cambrie Hazel picked up where she left off on Saturday, tossing her second consecutive shutout of the weekend with 10 strikeouts. Dixie State wrapped up the sweep with a 6-1 win in the finale. Jessica Gonzalez and Bailey Gaffin each finished 3-for-3 in game two, and Gonzalez smashed her second home run of the day en route to the victory.
 
GAME ONE – Dixie State 9, Regis 0
 
Dixie State sprinted out of the gate in the opener, scoring nine runs on 10 hits over the first three innings. Brenna Cornwall doubled, then scored on a Regis error in the bottom of the first, followed by a Riley Tyteca RBI-single to build a 2-0 lead.
 
The Trailblazers exploded for five runs on four hits in the second innings. Kaitlyn Delange laced an RBI-single to right center field, then scored on an error. After Gaffin plated a run with an RBI-single to right field, Gonzalez blasted a 2-2 pitch over the fence in center field to put an exclamation point on the inning.
 
DSU pushed the score to the final tally of the 9-0 in the third inning when Kasey Crawford drove a 2-RBI single down the left field line.
 
Meanwhile, Hazel was dominant in the pitcher's circle for the second straight day, striking out the seven of the first nine Regis batters. Hazel took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, and finished with 10 strikeouts to improve to 9-4 on the season.
 
GAME TWO – Dixie State 6, Regis 1
 
The Trailblazers picked up where they left off in game two, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After two outs to start the frame, Gaffin tripled to right center field. Four pitches later, Gonzalez demolished her second home run of the day to left center.
 
Gaffin and Gonzalez each picked up a RBI in the third inning to push the DSU advantage to 4-0.  Cornwall set up the runs with a triple down the right field line, followed by a Gaffin RBI-double to the same spot. Gonzalez then scored Gaffin from second with an RBI-single to left field.
 
Dixie State tacked on one run in both the fourth the fifth inning to build a 6-0 lead. Delange singled up the middle for a RBI in the fourth, and Gonzalez picked another RBI with a single in the fifth.
 
Regis broke the DSU weekend shutout bid with a solo home run in the top of the sixth to push the score to the final tally of 6-1.
 
Gaffin and Gonzalez each finished at 3-for-3 to lead DSU at the plate, while Carissa Burgess allowed just two hits and struck out three to improve to 13-3 in the pitcher's circle.
 
Dixie State will play a pod series against MSU Denver and Black Hills State in Denver next Saturday and Sunday.
