Softball swept by Mines in Sunday twinbill

The Dixie State softball team dropped both ends of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference twinbill on Sunday, 3-1 and 9-2, to Colorado School of Mines at the Regis softball field in Denver, Colorado.

In a carbon copy of Saturday's opener, the Trailblazers (19-8, 13-7 RMAC) allowed three runs in the bottom of the first inning in the opener on Sunday.

And like Saturday's opener, the Trailblazers saw a golden opportunity to cut into the lead in the top of the sixth in the opener on Sunday, loading the bases with no outs. Riley Tyteca laced a one-out RBI-single to center field to cut the lead to 3-1, but the next two DSU batters were retired to eliminate the threat and ultimately clinch the win for the Orediggers.

Brenna Cornwall and Bailey Gaffin led DSU with two hits each in the opener, while Cambrie Hazel (L, 7-4) and Alexandria Melendez split time in the pitcher's circle.

After two scoreless innings in the series finale, the Orediggers broke through with two runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth inning to build a 9-0 lead.

Dixie State plated two runs in the top of the fifth to avoid the eight-run mercy rule, scoring the first run on a CSM fielding error. Cornwall plated the second run with an RBI-infield single to push the score to the final tally of 9-2.

Cornwall again led DSU at the plate in game two with two hits, while Carissa Burgess (L, 11-3) and Melendez split time in the pitcher's circle.

The Trailblazers will host Regis in a four-game RMAC series next Saturday and Sunday at Karl Brooks Field.
