No. 29/22 Dixie State completed its second-straight series sweep to open its debut season of RMAC play as the Trailblazers powered past Colorado-Colorado Springs, 11-3, on Monday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. With the victory, the Trailblazers improved to 18-4 overall, which marked the best start after 22 games in the program's NCAA era (17-5 in both 2016 and 2017), and remained perfect in RMAC at 8-0.
DSU broke open a scoreless game in the home fourth, loading the bases with one out to come away with three runs to race to an early lead.
Kaid Urban got the Blazers on the board with a deep run-scoring flyout that allowed all three runners to advance ahead of
Brody Clifford, who singled to right field to drive home two more runs to cap the rally.
The Trailblazers then struck for three more runs in the sixth, including back-to-back home runs from
Cade Spurlin and
Jake Engel to lead off the frame, while
Braxton Ipson double in another run later in the stanza.
Meanwhile, junior righthander
Preston Hannay (W, 3-1) was dealing as he limited a potent UCCS offense to only one hit and faced just two batters over the minimum through his first six innings of work.
After the Mountain Lions (12-10/4-4 RMAC) trimmed the DSU lead to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the seventh, Dixie State struck for four more runs after the stretch to extend to a 10-2 advantage. The Trailblazers loaded the bases with three-straight lead-off singles by
Lane Pritchard,
Wyatt Branch and Spurlin. Engel and Urban both drew bases-loaded walks that forced in two runs, while Ipson picked up another RBI on a UCCS error.
Bryce Feist would later fly out to account for the fourth run of the rally and DSU cruised home from there for its eighth-straight win.
Spurlin went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead the DSU offense, while Pritchard and Ipson collected two hits apiece, as DSU outhit UCCS 12-4. Hannay surrendered just two hits and two runs with four strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work to earn his third winning decision of the season.
Dixie State heads back out on the road for a four-game RMAC series at New Mexico Highlands this Friday-through-Sunday in Las Vegas, N.M.
