Matt Conway poured in a career-high 34 points to help lead Dixie State to its ninth-consecutive victory in a 96-63 rout of Adams State Friday night inside Plachy Hall Gym. With the win, the Trailblazers improved to 14-8 overall and maintained a share of third place in the RMAC standings at 12-6, while ASU fell to 9-14, 9-9 in conference play.
Outside of three early ties, Dixie State led virtually the entire game, thanks in part of a decisive 14-0 run that turned an 18-15 Trailblazer advantage into a 32-15 cushion with 7:49 to play in the opening frame. Conway bolstered the strong start as he hit on six of his first eight shots, including 3-of-5 from the perimeter.
DSU led 45-29 at the intermission and quickly turned that into a 54-31 bulge as Conway scored the Blazers' first nine points of the stanza. Meanwhile the DSU defense held the Grizzlies to just 1-of-7 from the field over that stretch.
Adams State managed to pull to within 74-59 after a John Dewey three-point play with just under eight minutes to go, but
Zach Frampton drilled one of his four 3-pointers on the night on DSU's ensuing possession as the Trailblazers outscored ASU 22-4 the rest of the way to coast to the easy win.
Conway finished the night shooting 13-of-19 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from the perimeter, and hit on all four of his free throw attempts. The junior also pulled down six rebounds and dished out four assists in 30 minutes. Conway's 34 points wound up one point shy of tying Dixie State's single game record of 35 points set last season by DSU All-American
Trevor Hill in an overtime win against Eastern New Mexico (99-89; 11/17/17).
Frampton added 14 points on 5-of-8 from the floor (4-of-6 3FG), while
Julien Ducree and
Cameron Chatwin chipped in eight points apiece. DSU shot a blistering 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the field, which included an even 50.0 percent clip (9-of-18) from 3-point country. The Trailblazers also hit on 19-of-24 (.792) at the line and outrebounded Adams State 43-35.
While Dixie State was hitting on all cylinders on offense, the Trailblazer defense limited the Grizzlies to just 35.4 percent (23-of-65) shooting, 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from beyond the arc, and forced 17 Adams State turnovers. Dewey paced ASU with 26 points.
Dixie State will close out its 2018-19 regular season road slate Saturday night at Fort Lewis.
