Trailblazers grind out win over Black Hills State Saturday, 71-65

Deshka Olson scores a career-high 14 points with four 3-pointers

The Dixie State women's basketball team battled to a 71-65 win over Black Hills State inside the Burns Arena on Saturday, picking up its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory in the process.

The Trailblazers (6-3, 1-2 RMAC) shot 50 percent (21-of-42) from the field, while Deshka Olson scored 11 of her team and career-high 14 points in the second half to help propel DSU to victory. Olson connected on two 3-pointers in the third quarter and another in the fourth to go with a layup to finish the night with a 5-of-5 shooting performance.

Black Hills State (4-4, 1-2 RMAC) jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, taking advantage of a pair of DSU turnovers at the midway point of the first quarter. DSU responded with a London Pavlica layup and a traditional 3-point play by Ali Franks to cut the lead to 10-9. The teams traded baskets from there, and the Yellow Jackets took a 20-17 lead after one frame.

BHSU used an 11-3 run over the first seven minutes of the second quarter to build a 31-20 advantage. DSU countered with a 7-0 run, including Olson's first triple of the game, before the visitors scored the final basket of the half to take a 33-27 lead into the break.

The game went back and forth through most of the third quarter as the game hovered between a three and six-point lead for the visitors. The Trailblazers bucked the trend late in the frame with an 11-0 run to take a 46-41 lead. Keslee Stevenson and Olson sparked the run with back-to-back 3-pointers, while Olson added another to cap the run. BHSU answered with a 7-2 run to tie the game at 48-48, but the momentum had already swung.

Dixie State led nearly the entire fourth quarter, taking the lead for good when Makayla Johnson sank a pair of free throws to give DSU a 54-52 advantage with seven minutes to play. The Trailblazers later used a decisive 10-2 run to pull away and help seal the 71-65 victory.

The Trailblazers shot 50 percent (21-of-42) from the field, 47 percent (8-of-17) from beyond the 3-point arc, and 67 percent (21-of-31) from the free throw line. Olson led the charge with her career-high 14 points in just 13 minutes of play, while Stevenson added 12 points and four assists. Ali Franks finished with 10 points and two assists, and Pavlica chipped in eight points to go with seven rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and one steal.

DSU will take its first RMAC road trip of the season next week, traveling first to New Mexico Highlands on Friday before closing the trip at CSU-Pueblo on Saturday.
