Trailblazers hold off New Mexico Highlands Friday, 66-58

The Dixie State women's basketball team opened its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip with a 66-58 win over New Mexico Highlands on Friday in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

The Trailblazers (7-3, 2-2 RMAC) built a 25-13 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game behind five three pointers in the first quarter. Madi Loftus nailed three triples, while Keslee Stevenson connected on two more from outside to help DSU build its largest lead of the game.

New Mexico Highlands countered in the second quarter, opening the frame on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 25-23. Chesney Stevens ended the run, and a DSU drought of nearly five minutes, with a layup at the 5:03 mark. The basket sparked a 7-0 run for the DSU, and the Trailblazers eventually took a 33-28 into the halftime break.

The teams went back and forth in the third quarter as the teams traded baskets, and the Cowgirls answered each DSU attempt to push the lead back to double digits. Breaunna Gillen scored the final Trailblazer basket of the frame, and the visitors took a 50-45 lead to the final period.

NMHU used a 6-0 spurt over the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 51-50 lead with 7:15 to play. After a DSU timeout, Keslee Stevenson stopped the run with her fourth triple of the night. The shot sparked a decisive 16-3 run to push the lead back to double digits at 66-54. Stevenson led the charge with five points, while five different Trailblazers scored during the run. NMHU answered with back-to-back baskets, but it was too little, too late, and DSU wrapped up the 66-58 win.

Dixie State shot 38 percent (24-of-62) from the field, 36 percent (11-of-30) from 3-point range, and 58 percent (7-of-12) from the free throw line. Loftus led the way with a game-high 18 points and five 3-pointers to go with four rebounds and two steals. Stevenson added 17 points and three steals on 4-of-7 shooting from distance. Ali Franks chipped in nine points, while Chesney Stevens added 8 points and five rebounds. London Pavlica finished with five points, nine rebounds, and six assists.

The Trailblazers will close the trip on Saturday at CSU-Pueblo in Pueblo, Colorado. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
