Trailblazers drop overtime heartbreaker to South Dakota Mines Friday, 70-68

Dixie State women's basketball dropped a 70-68 decision to South Dakota Mines on Friday, falling in heartbreaking fashion inside the Burns Arena.

Trailing by two points with eight seconds remaining in the extra session, the Trailblazers (5-3, 0-2 RMAC) snagged a rebound off a missed free throw and called timeout to set up a final play. Dixie State got the look it wanted out of the timeout, as London Pavlica drove inside to draw multiple South Dakota Mines defenders her way.

As the Hardrockers collapsed on Pavlica, she found Ali Franks at the top of the key, who let a potential game-winning 3-pointer fly. The shot was on target and looked good from the release, but it was not to be as the attempt rattled off the back iron and fell out to seal the win for the visitors.

But were it not for Franks, the Trailblazers wouldn't have been in a position to win in overtime.

The senior guard tied a career-high with 23 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 20 points in the second half. After a quiet first half, Franks erupted in the second half and scored the game-tying basket to send the game to overtime, pulling down an offensive rebound and scoring a put-back bucket with two SDM players surrounding her to tie the game at 63-63.

The game went back-and-forth from the opening tip and featured 13 lead changes and five ties. Additionally, the teams led in the game for virtually the same amount of time and remained tied for over five minutes.

The Trailblazers shot 40 percent (28-of-69) from the field, 39 percent (9-of-23) from 3-point range, and 42 percent (3-of-7) from the free throw line. Franks led two DSU players in double figures with her 23-point night, while Pavlica added a season-high 13 points to go with six assists, five steals, and four rebounds. Chesney Stevens chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals and one block, while Emily Isaacson and Keslee Stevenson each finished with six points.

Dixie State will wrap up its seven-game homestand on Saturday against Black Hills State. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
