Trailblazers fall at No. 8 Colorado School of Mines Saturday, 35-27

The Dixie State football team dropped a hard-fought decision to No. 8 Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, taking the Orediggers to the wire in a 35-27 loss in Golden, Colorado.

After allowing a touchdown on the game's opening drive, the Trailblazers (7-3, 6-3 RMAC) responded with 17 unanswered points to take a 17-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

D'Arman Notoa scored the first DSU touchdown, breaking free for a 19-yard run to tie the game at 7-7. The run capped a 13-play, 86-yard drive that saw the Trailblazers convert twice on third down and once on fourth down.

After forcing a CSM three-and-out, the Trailblazers took the lead on their next drive when Keaton Mott connected with Dejuan Dantzler for a 77-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass to push the score to 14-7.

Dixie State repeated the process on the next possession, forcing a CSM punt, then marching into Oredigger territory. However, this time the drive stalled, and James Baird connected on a 31-yard field goal to push the lead to 17-7.

Colorado School of Mines countered on its next drive, marching 70 yards in six plays to cut the lead to 17-14. The Orediggers tacked on another score early in the third quarter to retake a 21-17 advantage.

The Trailblazers looked to respond later in the quarter when Jalen Powell blocked a CSM punt to set up the visitors deep in Oredigger territory. However, DSU could not find the end zone, and Baird connected on a 22-yard field goal to pull to within 21-20. Baird also set a new DSU single-season field goal record with the kick, converting his 10th field of the season.

The Orediggers wasted no time responding to the field goal and scored on a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play of the next drive to push the lead back to 28-20.

Dixie State countered early in the fourth quarter when Tanner Hammond fired a strike to Dantzler, who raced to the CSM 3-yard line for a 60-yard gain. Andrew Kannely-Robles plunged into the end zone on the next play to pull DSU back within 28-27, but the visitors would get no closer.

Despite playing stingy defense on the ensuing CSM possession, a fumbled punt and a DSU penalty would extend the CSM drive, allowing the Orediggers to find the end zone once more and push the score to the final tally of 35-27.

The Trailblazers finished with 447 yards (354 pass, 93 rush) of total offense. Mott completed 15-of-37 passes for 279 yards and one touchdown. Dantzler recorded his second career 200-yard receiving game, snagging 10 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown. Notoa added 33 yards rushing and one touchdown, while Kannely Robles chipped in 20 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Trailblazers allowed 403 yards of total offense. Malaki Malaki led the DSU defense with a career-high 16 tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss. Darrius Nash added a career-high 13 tackles and one pass breakup, while Simote Lokotui also finished with a career-high 13 tackles.

Dixie State will return to Trailblazer Stadium next Saturday for the 2019 season finale. The Trailblazers will host Adams State on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for Noon.
