Trailblazers roll to record eighth win Saturday, 35-10

Dixie State breaks or ties six program records in the victory

Dixie State football closed the 2019 season in style on Saturday, rolling to its program-record eighth win of the year with a 35-10 triumph over Adams State inside Trailblazer Stadium.

The Trailblazers (8-3, 7-3 RMAC) clicked on both sides of the ball in the win, racking up 480 yards of total offense, including 430 yards passing, while allowing just 215 yards of total offense, DSU's second-lowest opponent output of the season.

Dixie State set or tied six different program records in the win, including most wins in a season (8), most sacks in a season (40), individual single-season interceptions (Aaron Simpson; 7), individual career interceptions (Simpson; 7; tie), individual single-game touchdown passes (Kody Wilstead; 5; tie), and individual single-game touchdown receptions (Chase Hess; 3; tie).

DSU rattled off 28 unanswered points to take control of the contest after conceding an Adams State field goal on the Grizzlies' first possession of the game.

Wilstead connected with Hess for a 42-yard touchdown on his first pass attempt of the game to give the home team its first lead at 7-3 late in the first quarter.

On the Trailblazers' next possession, Wilstead fired a strike to Jalen Powell, who ran under the pass and sprinted to the end zone for a 45-yard touchdown to push the lead to 13-3.

Dixie State capped a 9-play, 80-yard drive late in the second quarter with Wilstead's second touchdown toss to Hess. After a failed two-point conversion, and later a 31-yard field goal by James Baird, the Trailblazers took a 22-3 lead into halftime.

The Trailblazers continued the air raid in the second half, as Wilstead and Dejuan Dantzler teamed up for a 74-yard catch-and-run touchdown midway through the third quarter.

Adams State tacked on a touchdown late in the frame, but DSU countered with Wilstead's third touchdown pass to Hess in the fourth quarter to push the score to the final tally of 35-10.

Wilstead finished with 341 yards and five touchdowns on 18-of-29 passing to lead the offense. Dantzler recorded his fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season, catching six passes for 108 yards and one touchdown. Hess added six catches for 83 yards and three touchdowns, while Powell chipped in six catches for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Alex Lilliard led the defense with a game-high nine tackles and one tackle for loss. Linaudre Schwallie added five tackles, including the record-setting 40th DSU sack of the season. Simpson finished with five tackles and two interceptions.
