Trailblazers use big second half to cruise past UT-Tyler Friday, 75-41

Dixie State women's basketball opened the 2019-20 season in winning fashion on Friday, using a big second half to claim a 75-41 triump over UT-Tyler in Wichita Falls, Texas.

After battling back-and-forth with the Patriots in the first half, the Trailblazers (1-0) exploded for 46 points, while holding UT-Tyler to just 14 points, over the final two quarters to win its second consecutive season-opener.

Dixie State set the tone for the second-half surge in the third quarter, outscoring the Patriots by a 28-10 count. The teams went back-and-forth through the first half of the third frame before the Trailblazers closed the period on a decisive 19-4 to push the lead to 57-37. Ali Franks sparked the run with a layup, followed by back-to-back triples by Madi Loftus and Keslee Stevenson. Franks scored eight more points during the run, including a 4-point play with less than a minute remaining in the quarter.

The teams went nearly two minutes without a basket in the fourth quarter before Chesney Stevens ended the drought with a layup to push the lead to 59-37. The basket sparked a run of eight consecutive points for DSU as the lead grew to 65-37 before the Patriots converted a free throw midway through the frame. Dixie State would tack on 10 more points before the final whistle to push the lead to the final tally of 75-41.

Meanwhile, the Trailblazer defense went to work in the final period, allowing just four points, while forcing six turnovers and recording two blocks to help seal the season-opening victory.

Dixie State shot 41 percent (27-of-65) from the field and 37 percent (10-of-27) from 3-point range. The Trailblazers set a new DSU single-game record for free throw percentage (minimum 10 attempts), converting a perfect 11-of-11 from the line. Franks led all scorers with 19 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists, while Stevenson added 11 points and Emily Isaacson finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Stevens chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, and three blocks in her Trailblazer debut, while Loftus and London Pavlica each added eight points.
