No. 3 seed Dixie State was eliminated from the 2019 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament by No. 6 seed MSU Denver on penalty kicks Friday afternoon at Stermole Soccer Stadium on the campus of Colorado School of Mines.
The match officially goes down as a tie, but MSUD will move on to face host No. 2 seed Mines in Sunday's semifinal match in Golden. Mines defeated No. 5 seed Fort Lewis 3-0 earlier in the day.
The two sides played to a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes of play, with both goals coming in the opening half. MSUD (7-8-4) struck first just 5:05 into the match when Nayeli Baez volleyed a cross to Gabriella Gamboa, who finished with a thigh-high shot just inside the far post to give the Roadrunners an early 1-0 advantage.
Dixie State (10-3-5) would net the equalizer early in the 32
nd-minute when senior
Kilee Allsop served a corner kick to fellow senior
Alexa Ashton, who settled and rocketed a 15-yard blast into the right-side of the netting to square the match at 1-1.
The Trailblazers controlled the offensive action for most of the second half and had several good looks for a potential game winner in regulation time. Junior
Kelsey Cook just missed on a shot with 26-plus minutes to play, then had a 1-v-1 chance against MSUD keeper Erica Torres with under 20 minutes remaining, but Torres managed to deflect the ball away at the last moment to keep the match tied.
Then in the 74
th-minute, senior
Kamie Hunter sent a free kick to the left side of the Roadrunner frame to DSU's leading scorer
Whitley Johns, but the sophomore's attempt sailed just wide of the post.
Hunter would later tee up another free kick with under five minutes to go in regulation, this time finding Ashton for a header near the Roadrunner 6-yard box. However Ashton's chance for her second goal of the day barely missed the mark.
After closing the remainder of regulation, and both 10 minute overtime periods, the match moved on to penalty kicks. The shootout was Dixie State's first in the program's NCAA era.
Both sides converted on each of their first three attempts and on MSUD's fourth attempt, freshman netminder
Mashaun Estridge guessed right on a Jessica Mooney try to give the Blazers a chance with two kicks remaining. However Dixie State could not convert on its next try, and after the Roadrunners tucked in a goal in the fifth round, DSU misfired on its final attempt to extend the shootout.
Dixie State outshot MSUD 17-7 in the match, including a 7-0 count in the second half, and held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal overall. Junior goalkeeper
Adelle Brown stopped three shots for the Trailblazers defensively.
Dixie State, which is currently ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II South Central regional rankings, will find out on Monday, Nov. 18, if the Trailblazers will make their second-ever NCAA tournament appearance. The 2019 NCAA South Central Regionals will begin next weekend at a site that has yet to be determined.
