No. 5 seed Dixie State made history on Friday as the Trailblazers claimed their first NCAA Division II postseason victory in program history with a penalty-kick shootout (4-3) result over No. 4 seed Texas Woman's on a frigid night at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Dixie State (10-3-6) will now advance on to face top-seed and No. 1 ranked UCCS in the NCAA Tournament second round on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The two sides battled to a 2-2 draw through 110 minutes of play, as both teams tallied goals in each half of regulation play. DSU got on the board 20 minutes into the match when
Jill Bennett played a ball to
Whitley Johns, who finished the chance for her team-leading 11
th goal of the season to spot the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
TWU (15-5-1) struck for the equalizer nearly nine minutes later on a Keely Chapman goal, and the match would remained tied until the 52
nd-minute, when Bennett tucked home her fifth goal of the year on a
Sophie Stewart feed to give the Blazers a 2-1 advantage. However that lead would not last long as Pioneer forward Riley Sutton pulled her side even just 1:45 later to square the match at 2-2.
After closing the remainder of regulation and both 10 minute overtime periods deadlocked, the match moved on to penalty kicks. The shootout was Dixie State's second in as many matches as the Blazers also had their RMAC quarterfinal match vs. MSU Denver (11/8) reach the PK stage.
DSU freshman keeper
Mashaun Estridge set the early tone in the shootout as she stopped the first Pioneer attempt, however the Trailblazers could not capitalize as they misfired on their first kick. After both teams converted in round two, Estridge stepped up again and made a huge stop on an Abigail Martinez boot.
Stewart and
Shaylynn Uyeshiro then tucked home their two chances in rounds three and four, and after TWU converted in its final kick to pull even at 3-3,
Kamie Hunter stepped forward and fired home the game-winning attempt to lift the Trailblazers to the win.
Dixie State outshot TWU 20-15 in the match and held an 8-7 edge in shots on goal overall. Junior goalkeeper
Adelle Brown made five saves for the Trailblazers defensively.
