Trailblazers drop RMAC opener to Westminster Saturday, 63-59

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a tough 63-59 decision to Westminster on Saturday in the 2019-20 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (5-2, 0-1 RMAC) raced to a 9-2 lead midway through the game's opening frame as Madi Loftus canned a 3-pointer and Ashley Greenwood scored six consecutive points to build the seven-point lead. Westminster answered with a 10-2 run to take a 12-11 lead, but DSU countered with five consecutive points to regain a 16-12 lead.

The Griffins battled back to regain a 21-19 lead early in the second quarter, but Dixie State responded again, this time with an 11-3 run to build a 30-24 advantage. Loftus sparked the run with a layup, while Breaunna Gillen scored four points and Makayla Johnson added a traditional 3-point play. The teams traded a pair of free throws over the final two minutes, and DSU took a 32-28 lead into the halftime break.

Dixie State shot 52 percent (12-of-23) in the first half, connecting on three triples and a perfect 5-of-5 free throw attempts.

The Trailblazers seemed to continue the hot shooting early in the third quarter, scoring the first five points of the frame to push the lead to 37-29. But the Griffins' offense came alive, countering with a 19-3 run to build a 48-40 lead. Meanwhile, the DSU offense went cold, converting on just 18 percent (3-of-16) from the field in the frame.

Westminster pushed the lead to a game-high mark of 11 points at 52-41 early in the fourth quarter, but the lead didn't last as the Trailblazers pushed back with an 18-6 run to take a 59-58 lead with just over a minute to play. But DSU wouldn't score again, as the visitors iced the game with a pair of critical offensive rebounds and free throws to clinch the 63-59 win.

Overall, Dixie State shot 38 percent (18-of-47) from the field, 26 percent (4-of-15) from 3-point range, and 82 percent (19-of-23) from the free throw line. Three Trailblazers finished in double figures, led by Loftus with 11 points and five rebounds. Greenwood also finished with 11 points, while Keslee Stevenson added 10 points.

The Trailblazers will play three games next week, beginning with an exhibition contest on Monday at Utah State. DSU will close the week at home against South Dakota Mines on Friday and Black Hills State on Saturday.
