Trailblazers hold off Saint Martin’s Saturday, 74-71

DSU off to its best start since the 2010-11 season

Dixie State women's basketball edged Saint Martin's for a 74-71 victory on Saturday in the final game of the Dixie State Classic inside the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers earned their fourth consecutive victory and improved to 5-1 with the win, marking their best start since the 2010-11 season, and their longest win streak since the 2013-14 season.

Dixie State overcame a slow start, shooting 51 percent (14-of-27) in the second half after connecting on just 30 percent (9-of-30) of shots from the field in the first half.

Saint Martin's took advantage of the slow DSU start, building an 18-11 lead late in the first quarter. The Trailblazers scored the final five points of the period when Ali Franks buried a triple and Madi Loftus converted a layup to cut the lead to 18-16.

After scoring the final points of the first quarter, Loftus posted the first DSU points of the second, splashing home a 3-pointer to pull the Trailblazers within 21-19. Ashley Greenwood scored eight of DSU's next 10 points to keep the home squad within one point at 30-29 at halftime.

The Trailblazers took their first lead since early in the first quarter when Keslee Stevenson drained a 3-pointer less than a minute into the third to give DSU a 34-32 advantage. From there, the teams traded baskets until Loftus connected on three triples over the final four minutes, including one just before the third-period buzzer, to push Dixie State to a 52-47 lead.

Dixie State looked to pull away in the fourth quarter, building the lead to eight points on two different occasions before taking a game-high lead of nine points at 68-59 with under three minutes to play. But Saint Martin's had an answer each time, including a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 72-71 with 12 seconds to play. However, the Trailblazers iced the game when Loftus drained a pair of free throws, and Greenwood blocked an SMU desperation 3-point heave at the buzzer to clinch the 74-71 win.

DSU shot 40 percent (23-of-57) from the field, 34 percent (9-of-26) from 3-point range, and 70 percent (19-of-27) from the free throw line.

The Trailblazers finished with four players in double figures for the first time in the 2019-20 campaign, led by Loftus with 20 points and four rebounds on 4-of-7 shooting from downtown. Greenwood added 13 points and five rebounds, while Franks chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds. London Pavlica finished with 11 points, including eight points in the fourth quarter.

Dixie State will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next Saturday, hosting in-state rival Westminster inside the Burns Arena. Tipoff is schedule for 5:30 p.m.
