Trailblazers Knock Off No. 1 UCCS Sunday to Advance on to the NCAA D-II "Sweet 16"

No. 5 seed Dixie State pulled off the biggest upset of the opening weekend of the 2019 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament on Sunday as the Trailblazers knocked off No.1 ranked and fellow RMAC member UCCS by a 2-1 count inside Mountain Lion Stadium.

Dixie State will advance on the NCAA Division II "Sweet 16" and will face No. 2 seed Dallas Baptist (17-0-3), which advanced on to the third round with a win over No. 3 seed Colorado School of Mines in penalty kicks (T, 1-1; 5-4 in PKs) this past Saturday afternoon in Dallas.

Just like in last Friday's NCAA first round win vs. Texas Woman's, the Trailblazers drew first blood early in the 21st-minute, and coincidentally it was the same duo of Whitley Johns and Jill Bennett who again teamed up for the opening score. Bennett served a ball over to Johns, who tucked home her team-leading 12th goal of the season inside the lower left corner of the net to give DSU a 1-0 advantage.

UCCS (19-2-0) quickly answered with the equalizer late in the 29th-minute with a Savannah Mills goal to pull even at 1-1.

The match would remain tied until the 59th-minute when Jaci Cook-Dandos one-timed a shot into an empty frame for her fourth goal of the year to give Dixie State the lead back at 2-1. The ball bounded into the Mountain Lion penalty box, where Mountain Lion goalkeeper Mollee Swift and an UCCS defender collided, which created the chance for the sophomore, who settled the deflection and netted the eventual game-winning goal.

The Trailblazers then had a great look to add to their lead eight minutes later when Zoe Clark rocketed a ball toward the top shelf of the frame, but Swift made an incredible one-handed deflection that pushed the ball over the crossbar to deny the chance. Minutes later, UCCS mounted a rush that set up a Mills chance inside the DSU 18, but her shot bounded just wide of the far post.

Dixie State dodged one more UCCS scoring threat with 6:48 to play when RMAC player of the year Shanade Hopcroft fired a shot toward the right post, but DSU netminder Adelle Brown got there in time to make the save and preserve the lead. DSU was able to manage the rest of the match defensively to close out biggest win in the program's NCAA era.

The Trailblazers won despite being out-shot 20-10 in the match, though DSU owned an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Brown was credited with four saves as she picked up her eight win in goal on the season.

The third and fourth rounds of the 2019 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament will be held the weekend of Dec. 5-8, at on-campus sites. However the day, time and location of DSU's NCAA third round match vs. DBU has yet to be announced. Visit DixieStateAthletics.com for complete DSU women's soccer tournament information.
