Trailblazers roll past Simon Fraser for record 5th straight win

Dixie State off to best start of its NCAA Division II era

The Dixie State football team continued its winning ways on Saturday, rolling to a 55-21 victory over Simon Fraser in non-conference action at Trailblazer Stadium.

The Trailblazers (5-1) made history with the win, pushing their win streak to an NCAA Division II-era record five games, while securing the program's best start from the same time period. The DSU defense chipped in with its own piece of history, finishing with a single-game record 10 total sacks.

Dixie State wasted no time setting the scene, finding the end zone less than a minute after beginning its first possession. Kody Wilstead capped the four-play drive with a 20-yard laser to Xavier Smith, who tiptoed the sideline in the end zone to give the Trailblazers a 7-0 lead.

It was more of the same on DSU's next possession, scoring in less than 90 seconds. Except this time, the Trailblazers did most their damage on the ground. Wilstead opened the drive with a 24-yard scramble, followed by a 7-yard run by Sei-J Lauago. Two plays later, Lauago broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run to stake the home squad to a 14-0 advantage.

The Dixie State defense forced a Simon Fraser turnover-on-downs on the ensuing possession, and again, the offense found the end zone. After marching to the SFU 36-yard line, Wilstead found Kasey Allison for a 36-yard pitch-and-catch to push the lead to 21-0 late in the first quarter.

The Trailblazers would tack on 17 more points in the second quarter, and scored a season-high 38 first-half points.

After conceding an SFU touchdown, Xavier Smith made sure the visitors wouldn't hold the momentum for long, returning the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.

On DSU's next possession, Keaton Mott found Chase Hess for a short pass into the end zone. The play was set up by a 40-yard strike down the sideline to Rickie Johnson.

James Baird wrapped up the first-half scoring with a season-long 42-yard field goal to push the DSU lead to 38-7 at the break.

The Trailblazers picked up where they left off in the third quarter, taking the opening drive seven plays and 65 yards for a touchdown. Wilstead completed a 26-yard pass to Hess, and a 19-yard pass to Jalen Powell during the drive to set up the 7-yard touchdown pass to Dejuan Dantzler.

Later in the quarter, DSU put together its longest scoring drive of the game, marching 89 yards in 10 plays. The home team again struck pay dirt when Andrew Kannely-Robles capped the drive with a 1-yard surge into the end zone.

Simon Fraser added a pair of second-half touchdowns to cut the lead to 52-21 before Baird pushed the final tally to 55-21 with a 32-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter.

The Trailblazers surpassed the 500-yard mark for the second consecutive game, finishing with 521 yards (336 pass/185 rush) of total offense. Wilstead completed 12-of-18 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns, while Mott added 143 yards and one touchdown on 10-of-13 passing.

Allison led all DSU receivers with five catches for 75 yards and one touchdown, while Hess added four catches for 54 yards and one touchdown. Wilstead also led the Trailblazers with 84 yards rushing on six carries, while Lauago and Kannely-Robles each added a touchdown run.

Defensively, the Trailblazers allowed 380 yards (327 pass/53 rush) of total offense, while disrupting the SFU backfield with the single-game record 10 sacks. Malaki Malaki posted a team-high seven tackles and one sack, while Dylan Hendrickson added six tackles and 1.5 sacks. Alex Lilliard chipped in five tackles, one sack, and four pass breakups.

Dixie State returns to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action next Saturday with a showdown at Western Colorado. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
