Trailblazers stopped by Chadron State Saturday, 40-27

Dixie State football saw its six-game win streak snapped on Homecoming Saturday, dropping a 40-27 decision to Chadron State at Trailblazer Stadium.

The Trailblazers (6-2, 5-2 RMAC) seemed to grab the momentum early in the game, as Sei-J Lauago raced 69 yards to the end zone on the first play from scrimmage to give DSU a 7-0 lead.

However, Dixie State saw its storybook start quickly turn into a nightmare over the next 20 minutes of the contest.

Chadron State responded to the DSU touchdown on its first offensive possession, driving 93 yards in 13 plays to tie the game at 7-7. The Eagles would also score touchdowns on three of their next four possessions to build a 28-7 halftime lead before tacking on a field goal early in the third quarter to push the advantage to 31-7.

The Trailblazers countered with Tanner Hammond at quarterback, marching 58 yards in 10 plays to cut the lead to 31-14. Using a mix of pass and run, DSU moved to the CSC 16-yard line before Hammond connected with Dejuan Dantzler for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

After another CSC field goal, Dixie State quickly moved down the field again to cut the lead to 34-21 late in the third quarter. Hammond opened the drive with a 25-yard pass to Chase Hess, followed by a 10-yard toss to Dantzler. Two plays later, Hammond scrambled 33 yards to the end zone.

Trailing by just 13 points heading to the fourth quarter, the home squad appeared poised to continue the comeback in the final frame. However, a costly turnover on downs deep in its own territory led to another Chadron State touchdown to push the lead back to 40-21.

The Trailblazers would add a final touchdown two drives later when Hammond found D'Arman Notoa for a 7-yard score on fourth and goal to push the score to the final tally of 40-27.

Dixie State finished with 360 yards of total offense (249 pass/111 rush). Hammond accounted for three touchdowns to lead the offense, completing 17-of-32 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 45 yards and another touchdown. Lauago rushed for 89 yards and one touchdown, while Dantzler led all DSU receivers with seven catches for 119 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Trailblazers allowed 442 yards (239 pass/203 rush) of total offense. Syrr Barnes posted a team-high 11 tackles, while Malaki Malaki added nine tackles, and Travis Plantier chipped in seven tackles.

Dixie State will close out its current two-game homestand next Saturday with a clash against Colorado Mesa. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
