Trailblazers grind out 28-20 win Saturday at Western Colorado

Dixie State extends record win streak to six games

The Dixie State football team pushed its record win streak to six games on Saturday, grinding out a 28-20 road victory over Western Colorado at the Mountaineer Bowl in Gunnison, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (6-1, 5-1 RMAC) overcame a 14-7 halftime deficit in the win, marking the third time this season DSU has posted a victory after trailing at halftime.

After scoring 69 points in the first half over the last two games, The Trailblazers (6-1, 5-1 RMAC) managed only a single touchdown over the first two quarters on Saturday, when Andrew Kannely-Robles plunged into the end zone from two yards out early in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, Western Colorado used a steady dose of pass and run to find the end zone twice and build its halftime lead.

Facing a halftime deficit on the road for the third time this season, the Trailblazers responded just how they did the first two times, exploding for 225 yards of total offense and 21 points in the third quarter, while holding the Mountaineers to just 42 yards of production in the frame to build a 28-14 lead.

"The guys were fired up at halftime," head coach Paul Peterson said. "We made some adjustments and were able to get the ball rolling in the second half. It's never easy to win on the road, but we found a way to get it done."

After punting on its first possession of the third quarter, the Trailblazers made the next drive count, marching 60 yards in six plays to tie the game at 14-14. Kody Wilstead found Dejuan Dantzler for a 28-yard pass, followed by a 12-yard run by Sei-J Lauago, to move into the red zone. Three plays later, Rickie Johnson made a leaping catch in the left corner of the end zone to level the score.

The DSU defense forced its second three-and-out of the frame on the ensuing WCU possession to get the ball back for the offense. And the offense did not waste the opportunity, marching 73 yards in 10 plays to stake the Trailblazers to a 21-14 lead. Kannely-Robles capped the drive with his second 2-yard touchdown run of the game.

It was more of the same after the DSU kickoff, as the defense forced its third consecutive three-and-out, followed by the third consecutive touchdown by the DSU offense. But this time, Dixie State would only need two plays and 40 second to extend its lead.

After a Kannely-Robles 3-yard run, Wilstead connected with Kasey Allison for a 75-yard pitch-and-catch touchdown on the second play of the drive to push the lead to 28-14. Allison turned in a highlight-reel performance on the play, propping himself up with his hand after making the catch to stay off the ground, then racing to the end zone for the score.

Western Colorado looked to respond on its next possession, but after moving to the DSU 17-yard line, the Trailblazer defense stopped the Mountaineers on four consecutive plays to force a turnover-on-downs.

The DSU defense would force two more turnovers-on-downs in the fourth quarter, while snagging two interceptions, including a leaping catch by Aaron Simpson in the back of the end zone to stop a WCU scoring threat.

The Mountaineers eventually broke through for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to the final tally of 28-20, but Dixie State recovered the ensuing onside kick to clinch the win.

The Trailblazers finished with 408 yards (302 pass/106 rush) of total offense. Wilstead completed 19-of-35 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns. Dantzler led all DSU receivers with seven catches for 129 yards, while Allison finished with three receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Lauago finished with a team-high 50 yards rushing, while D'Arman Notoa added 37 yards, and Kannely-Robles chipped in 30 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Dixie State allowed 323 yards (218 pass/105 rush) of total offense. Dylan Hendrickson led the DSU defense with nine tackles and 2.5 sacks, while Simpson finished with eight tackles and one interception. Malaki Malaki added seven tackles, while J.T. Anderson and Darrius Nash finished with six tackles each.

Dixie State returns to Trailblazer Stadium next Saturday to host Chadron State in its annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
