Trailblazer Women's Soccer Comes Up Just Short In 1-0 Loss to No. 16 Mines

Dixie State came out on the short end of a tough 1-0 result against No. 16 Colorado School of Mines Sunday afternoon at Trailblazer Stadium.

Playing their second top-20 ranked opponent in as many Sundays, the Trailblazers (5-3-3/3-2-2 RMAC) battled the Orediggers to a scoreless stalemate in the opening 45 minutes of play. DSU forced the issue offensively to begin the second half and had several good looks in the early going, but could not find the back of the net.

DSU's first look came in the 50th-minute when Jill Bennett raced down the left sideline, settled and played a ball to the middle of the Oredigger 6-yard box to Whitley Johns, but the sophomore was denied by CSM keeper Shannon Mooney. Then 10 minutes later, Sophie Stewart rocketed a shot to the near post, but again Mooney was there to make a diving stop, which led to the first of two DSU corner kicks.

On the second corner kick midway through the 61st-minute, Kilee Allsop bent the attempt around the near post and over the outstretch arms of Mooney for an apparent Trailblazer goal. However the referee whistled DSU for a foul in the scrum in front of the net that negated the goal.

Mines (11-1-1/7-0-1 RMAC) managed to break through with the lone goal of the match nearly seven minutes later when Nicole LaTourette tucked in a redirected ball played in Lindsey Tornabene to give her side a one-goal advantage.

DSU had two more chances to net the equalizer in the final minutes as Stewart sent a ball ahead to Kelsey Cook, but her chance sailed over the cross bar with under 12 minutes to play. Then with 5:08 to go, Johns got loose for another shot, but her attempt also sailed just over the frame.

Dixie State heads out on its penultimate road trip of the 2019 season next weekend for matches at Adams State on Friday, Oct. 18, and at Fort Lewis on Sunday, Oct. 20.
