UCCS rallies past DSU Women with big third quarter

Trailblazers see 10-point halftime lead evaporate in third quarter

Dixie State women's basketball dropped a tough 59-54 decision to UC-Colorado Springs on Friday in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In a tale of two halves, the Trailblazers (6-4, 2-4 RMAC) saw a 10-point halftime lead evaporate in the third quarter, as UCCS opened the second half on an 8-0 run to pull to within 36-34. The teams went back and forth over the next three minutes before the Mountain Lions closed the period on a 10-2 run to take a 46-44 lead into the final period. In all, UCCS outscored DSU 20-8 in the third quarter.

After the teams went back and forth early in the fourth quarter, Lisa VanCampen buried a pair of free throws to pull DSU to within 50-48 at the 7:20 mark. UCCS countered the free throws with a 6-0 run to push the lead to 56-48 as DSU went scoreless over the next three minutes. Madi Loftus ended the run with a triple at the 4:09 mark, while Keslee Stevenson scored a layup after a Morgan Myers steal on the ensuing possession to pull the Trailblazers within 56-53. But DSU would get no closer, as UCCS added a jumper and a free throw to close out the 59-54 victory.

The script was completely different in the first half, as the visitors controlled the game for the first 20 minutes of play.

The teams traded runs throughout the first quarter as Dixie State opened an 8-4 lead through the first three minutes of the game. Ali Franks scored four points during the opening minutes, converting a pair of jumpers. UCCS answered to tie the game at 8-8, but VanCampen drained a 3-pointer to retake an 11-8 lead. The Mountain Lions responded with a 5-0 run to take a 13-11 lead, but DSU countered with a run of its own, scoring eight straight points to build a 19-13 advantage. UCCS again answered, closing the first frame on a 7-3 run to pull to within 22-20.

The Trailblazers used a 13-1 run to seize momentum through the first six minutes of the second quarter to build a 35-21 lead. Dixie State connected on three triples during the run, including two by Franks and another by Stevenson. UCCS responded with a 5-1 run to pull to within 36-26 at halftime.

In all, Dixie State shot 33 percent (21-of-63) from the field, 32 percent (8-of-25) from 3-point range, and 66 percent (4-of-6) from the free throw line. Franks led two DSU players in double figures with 14 points, while VanCampen added 11 points.

The Trailblazers now head to Golden, Colorado, for a Saturday evening matchup against Colorado School of Mines. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
