Trailblazers edged by Orediggers Saturday, 86-81

The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped its second consecutive game for the first time this season on Saturday, falling 86-81 to Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (6-5, 2-5 RMAC) and Orediggers went back and forth throughout the contest, playing to 11 ties and changing leads eight times. Dixie State shot a season-high 48 percent (26-of-54) from the field and tied a season-high mark with 13 successful 3-point attempts, as Keslee Stevenson (22 points) and Madi Loftus (17 points) each buried five triples to finish with career-high scoring marks. However, the home squad would do just enough to come away with the victory.

The Orediggers jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the first quarter before Stevenson connected on back-to-back treys, and Mariah Martin scored a layup to cap an 8-2 run and take a 14-13 lead at the 2:53 mark. The home squad countered with a 7-3 run to take a 20-17 lead to the second frame.

Dixie State found its shooting touch in the second quarter, shooting 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field and outscoring the Orediggers 20-12 to take a 37-32 lead into the break. Ali Franks converted a traditional 3-point play and nailed a triple to finish the quarter with six points, while Loftus chipped in five points and a 3-pointer.

Colorado School of Mines flipped the script through the first six minutes of the third quarter with a 23-7 run to take a 55-44 lead at the 4:07 mark. But Dixie State refused to go away, answering with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 55-55. Rashel Blazzard sparked the run with a steal and a layup, while Loftus added another triple. Blazzard then scored the final points of the run with a pair of free throws. However, the tie remained for just two seconds, as the Orediggers hit a half-court buzzer beater on the ensuing possession to take a 58-55 advantage to the final frame.

The teams went back and forth throughout the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter. The Trailblazers tied the game at 63-63 when Stevenson buried three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt. Later, Loftus evened the score 68-68 with her fourth 3-pointer of the night. Dixie State eventually took the lead at 72-70 on a Franks layup at the 2:41 mark. However, the home squad answered with a 9-0 run to build a 79-72 lead with just 47 seconds remaining.

But Dixie State would not quit, pulling to within 82-81 with a 9-3 run over the next 25 seconds of game time. Loftus sparked the run with her fifth triple of the night, while Stevenson nailed back-to-back 3-pointers for the second time in the game. CSM would convert a pair of free throws to push the lead to 84-81 with 19 seconds remaining, leaving the visitors one last chance to pull even. However, a layup attempt caromed off the rim, and the Orediggers sealed the victory with two free throws.

Dixie State shot a season-high 48 percent (26-of-54) from the field, a season-high 44 percent (13-of-29) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free throw line. Stevenson finished with a career-high 22 points on 5-of-7 3-point shooting, while Loftus finished with a career-high 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Two other Trailblazers finished in double figures, as Franks scored 12 points, and Martin added 10 points and six assists.

The Trailblazers return to the Burns Arena to host MSU Denver on Friday and Chadron State on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
