Trailblazers rally for 57-50 win over Western Colorado

DSU closes the game on 12-2 run to seal the victory

The Dixie State women's basketball team claimed a 57-50 come-from-behind victory over Western Colorado on Saturday inside Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (10-7, 6-7 RMAC) faced the daunting task of battling the No. 3 team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at over 7,700 feet elevation less than 24 hours after a Friday evening tilt at RMAC-leader Colorado Mesa.

Following a back-and-forth battle throughout the contest, DSU trailed 48-45 midway through the fourth quarter after consecutive layups by the Mountaineers. Dixie State responded with a set of back-to-back layups of its own, as Mariah Martin and Keslee Stevenson converted in the paint to give the visitors a 49-48 lead at the 2:58 mark.

After regaining the lead, the Trailblazers made sure they didn't relinquish it, converting 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to ice the 57-50 victory. In all, Dixie State closed the game on 12-2 run and outscored Western Colorado by a 20-9 count in the final frame. London Pavlica led the charge with eight points in the fourth quarter on 4-of-5 shooting from the free throw line, while Martin added another four points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe.

Dixie State took its first lead of the game at the 5:46 mark of the first quarter on a Morgan Myers triple to build a 5-3 advantage. The teams traded leads throughout the second portion of the first frame, until WCU closed the period on a 6-0 run to take a 12-9 lead.

The middle quarters saw more of the same as the Mountaineers outscored the Trailblazers by a single point at a 29-28 count through the second and third stanzas. Lisa VanCampen connected on two 3-pointers during the second quarter to lead DSU with six points, while Stevenson buried two triples in the third period. Myers and Ali Franks each scored four points in both quarters to help the visitors stay within striking distance and set up the fourth-quarter rally.

Dixie State shot 43 percent (20-of-46) from the field, 37 percent (6-of-16) from 3-point range, and 73 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line. Myers led the way with a game-high 14 points and five rebounds, while Pavlica finished with 10 points and a game-high five assists. VanCampen chipped in nine points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Stevenson and Franks added eight points each.

Overall, the Trailblazers posted a 2-2 record over their season-long four-game road swing, and now return to the Burns Arena for a season-long four-game homestand. Dixie State opens the homestand on Friday against Fort Lewis. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
