Slow start dooms Trailblazers in loss to Fort Lewis

Dixie State women's basketball dropped a tough 66-60 decision to Fort Lewis on Saturday in its return to the Burns Arena.

The Trailblazers (10-8, 6-8 RMAC) couldn't overcome a slow start, shooting 35 percent (7-of-20) from the field in the first half. Meanwhile, the Skyhawks raced to a 10-0 lead over the first four minutes of the game. Dixie State responded with a 9-0 run, led by five points by London Pavlica to pull to within 10-9. FLC countered with a 6-1 run to take a 16-10 lead into the second quarter.

Fort Lewis pushed the lead back to double digits in the second quarter, using an 8-2 run to build a 24-12 lead at the 4:08 mark. DSU would trim the lead to nine points on several occasions, but the Skyhawks answered each time to maintain a 31-19 halftime lead.

The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter as neither team managed to seize full control of the momentum. The Trailblazers outscored the visitors by an 18-17 count, but FLC took a 48-37 lead to the final period. Ali Franks powered DSU in the third, scoring seven points on 3-of-3 shooting.

Dixie State used a 10-1 run in the late stages of the fourth quarter to cut the FLC lead to 60-57 with 34 seconds remaining. After the Skyhawks split a pair of free throws, the Trailblazers saw a chance to cut the lead to one point, but a 3-point attempt rimmed out with 21 seconds remaining. Fort Lewis then iced the game at the free throw line, connecting on 5-of-6 attempts to seal the 66-60 victory.

The Trailblazers shot 47 percent (24-of-51) from the field, 30 percent (6-of-20) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (6-of-8) from the free throw line. Mariah Martin led three DSU players in double figures, finishing with 16 points and four assists. Franks added 15 points, while Pavlica chipped in 10 points.

Dixie State closes the weekend with a Saturday evening matchup against Adams State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
