Trailblazers Shoot Past Colorado Mesa Friday, 86-61

DSU ties NCAA-era record with 13 3-pointers

Wade Miller led five Trailblazers in double figures with a season-high 17 points as Dixie State rolled to an 86-61 victory at Colorado Mesa Friday night inside Brownson Arena. The win, DSU's third-straight on its current four-game RMAC road swing, evened the Blazers' season record at 8-8, 6-6 in conference play, while the Mavericks fell to 12-6 overall, 7-5 in league action.

The Trailblazers led wire-to-wire as they bolted out to a quick 14-4 lead thanks to the hot shooting hand of Andre Wilson, who hit a 3-pointer on his way to five early points. Dixie State then blew the game open with another 14-4 run that turned a 19-11 game into a 33-15 Blazer advantage after a Miller trey with 7:09 to go in the opening stanza.

Dixie State led 44-31 at the halftime break and maintained a double-digit cushion the entire second half, eventually pushing the spread to 20 points at 66-46 after Miller's fourth trifecta of the night midway through the stanza. The Trailblazers never looked back from there to cruise home with the runaway win.

Miller was a perfect 5-of-5 from beyond the arc and went 6-of-8 overall to go with two rebounds and one steal in just 15 minutes off the bench. Wilson finished with 11 points with a pair of treys, while Dub Price was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor with two 3-pointers on his way to 15 points in 18 reserve minutes as the DSU bench outscored the CMU reserves by a 43-28 count.

Matt Conway added in 13 points with three rebounds, and Jack Pagenkopf tallied 12 points, five boards and three assists..

Dixie State tied an NCAA-era program record with 13 3-pointers on the night as the Blazers went 13-of-21 (.619) from the perimeter, which coincidentally is what DSU shot at the foul line (13-of-21; .619). Dixie State also connected on 13 3-pointers in a road game at Carroll College during the 2008-09 season (11/11/08).

Overall, DSU hit on 58.8 percent (30-of-51) from the floor and outrebounded the Mavericks by a 33-28 count.

The Trailblazers limited Colorado Mesa to just 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the floor, which included a 3-of-18 clip (.167) from 3-point country. DSU's defense also held the RMAC's leading scorer Connor Nichols to just 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting, which was nine points below his season scoring average. Maverick guard Kenzo Nuno led all scorers with 18 points off the bench.

Dixie State will wrap up its season-long four-game RMAC road swing Saturday night in Gunnison against Western Colorado. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
