Trailblazers fall at No. 20 Colorado Mesa Friday, 65-42

Dixie State women's basketball dropped a tough 65-42 decision to No. 20 Colorado Mesa on Friday inside Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colorado.
 
The Trailblazers (9-7, 5-7 RMAC), playing in their third consecutive road contest, couldn't overcome a cold shooting night, converting on a season-low 26 percent (14-of-52) of field goal attempts.  Meanwhile, the Mavericks shot 48 percent from the field and splashed home 10 3-pointers.
 
Colorado Mesa built a 14-5 lead over the first seven minutes of the first quarter, connecting on three triples during the stretch. Dixie State responded with a 10-5 run to close the frame, including a buzzer-beater 3-pointer by London Pavlica, to trim the CMU lead to 18-15.
 
The Mavericks seized control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Trailblazers 19-3 during the period to build a 37-18 halftime lead. Pavlica converted a pair of free throws, and Lisa VanCampen added another during the frame, while DSU went cold from the field, missing on each of its 14 field goal attempts.
 
The teams traded baskets through the first half of the third quarter before CMU closed the frame on a 14-7 run to extend the lead to 56-32. VanCampen scored four points during the quarter, while Ali Franks and Madi Loftus added three points each.
 
Dixie State opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 56-38 at 6:48 mark. VanCampen and Loftus each converted a layup, while Pavlica sank a pair of free throws. CMU countered with a 5-0 run to push the lead back over 20 points at 61-38. From there, the two sides traded baskets over the final six minutes, and the Mavericks claimed the 65-42 triumph.
 
The Trailblazers shot 26 percent (14-of-52) from the field, 14 percent (3-of-21) from 3-point range, and 78 percent (11-of-14) from the free throw line. Pavlica and VanCampen finished with nine points each to lead the scoring, while Franks added eight points. Keslee Stevenson and Loftus chipped in five points each.
 
Dixie State will wrap up its four-game road swing on Saturday at Western Colorado in Gunnison, Colorado. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
