Trailblazers shoot past Regis, 74-70

DSU posts highest shooting percentage since 2012

Dixie State women's basketball earned a vital road victory on Saturday, holding off Regis for a 74-70 victory in Denver to claim a weekend split in Colorado.

The Trailblazers (9-6, 5-6 RMAC) posted the fifth-highest shooting percentage, and the highest since 2012, of the NCAA Division II era en route to the victory, shooting a season-high 56 percent (27-of-48) from the field. DSU also shot 45 percent (9-of-20) from 3-point range and 64 percent (11-of-17) from the free throw line.

Madi Loftus led four DSU players in double-figures with a career-high 23 points on 5-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Loftus also added five rebounds and three steals in a season-high 35 minutes of play. London Pavlica added 13 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Ali Franks and Keslee Stevenson chipped in 10 points each.

Dixie State found itself in an early 7-2 hole, but responded with a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to take an 11-7 lead. Loftus scored four points during the run, while Stevenson buried her first triple of the game. Regis closed the quarter on a 7-0 run to carry a 14-11 advantage to the second period.

The Trailblazers caught fire in the second quarter, shooting a blistering 73 percent (11-of-15) from the field and 71 percent (5-of-7) from 3-point range. The visitors outscored the hosts by a 27-19 count to build a 38-33 halftime lead. Loftus led the charge with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from distance, while Lisa VanCampen scored all seven of her points during the frame.

Neither team managed to create separation in the third quarter. The two sides traded runs throughout the period, and the five-point DSU remained at 54-49 heading to the final stanza. Cameron Mooney scored four points on 2-of-2 shooting during the frame, while Franks and Loftus also added four points each.

Dixie State built its only double-digit lead of the game early in the fourth quarter, opening the frame on a 10-2 run to take a 64-51 lead at the 6:38 mark. Stevenson sparked the run with a jumper, while Loftus and Pavlica each nailed a triple on consecutive possessions. Regis responded with a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 69-67 at the 1:42 mark. But the visitors would withstand the run, as Pavlica converted on 5-of-6 free throws, and grabbed a critical offensive rebound, to ice the 74-70 victory.

The Trailblazers will return to Colorado to take on conference-leader Colorado Mesa next Friday and third-place Western Colorado on Saturday.
