Trailblazers fall at Colorado Christian, 78-61

The Dixie State women's basketball team opened its Denver area trip on Friday with a 78-61 loss to Colorado Christian in Lakewood, Colorado.

The Trailblazers (8-6, 4-6 RMAC) jumped out to a 10-3 lead, only allowing a CCU 3-pointer in the first four minutes of game time. Rashel Blazzard set the tone for the start, scoring the first five points of the game with a layup and a traditional 3-point play. Keslee Stevenson scored the next five points with a triple, followed by a pair of free throws.

CCU answered with a 9-0 run, connecting on three more 3-pointers to take a 12-10 lead. In all, the Cougars converted six triples and shot 50 percent from the outside during the first frame, eventually building a 22-20 lead heading to the second quarter.

Dixie State scored the first basket of the second quarter on a Morgan Myers layup to tie the game at 22-22, but the visitors wouldn't score again for nearly three minutes. In the meantime, CCU added three layups to build a 28-22 advantage. Blazzard halted the CCU run with a jumper in the paint, but the Cougars countered with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to push the lead to 31-24.

Colorado Christian took the first double-digit lead of the game three minutes later and eventually extended the lead to 43-31 just before halftime. DSU fought back into the game with a quick 5-0 run when London Pavlica converted a layup and Stevenson beat the halftime buzzer with a triple to cut the lead to 43-36.

The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter as the Trailblazers again cut a double-digit deficit to single digits at 62-54 heading to the final frame. Madi Loftus provided a spark for DSU in the third period and buried back-to-back 3-pointers for six points in the quarter.

CCU took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Trailblazers 16-7 in the final frame to claim the 78-61 victory. Loftus scored four of the DSU points in the period with a layup and two free throws.

Dixie State shot 37 percent (21-of-56) from the field, 27 percent (6-of-22) from 3-point range, and 76 percent (13-of-17) from the free throw line. Blazzard led two DSU players in double figures with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with five rebounds and three steals. Loftus posted her third double-figure scoring performance in her last four outings, finishing with 10 points and three rebounds.

The Trailblazers will wrap up the weekend with a Saturday afternoon matchup at Regis in Denver. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
