Coming on the heels of Friday's announcement that Dixie State Athletics is transitioning to NCAA Division I status, DSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Dr. Jason Boothe announced Tuesday the scheduling of three future football series against Big Sky Conference members Southern Utah, Weber State and Northern Arizona.
"With our move to Division I, it is critical that we play our fellow regional institutions to create the rivalries that our fans want to see," Dr. Boothe said. "It is going to be a lot of fun to compete with these fantastic programs and we are very thankful that each school has agreed to play both at their place and here in St. George."
Dixie State will play its first-ever game at the D-I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level against SUU at Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, which will mark the first time the Trailblazers and Thunderbirds will have met on the gridiron since the 2010 season (at SUU 52, DSU 0; 11/6/10). DSU will also play at SUU to open the 2022 season (9/3/22), while the third game in the series will take place at Trailblazer Stadium in 2024 (9/7/24).
The two sides revived the Washington County/Iron County rivalry in the 2009 season (at SUU 36, DSU 7; 9/3/09), this after having not squared off in football since both were junior colleges in 1962.
DSU and Weber State have also agreed to a three-game series, which will begin in Ogden on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020, at Stewart Stadium. The Wildcats will visit Trailblazer Stadium in 2021 (date TBA) in their first game in St. George since both schools competed at the junior college level (1961). The series will then return to Ogden for the third game to be played in the 2022 season (date TBA). DSU and Weber State have met just one other time as four-year schools, that coming during the 2008 season in Ogden in a 44-7 Wildcat win (9/13/08).
Dixie State and NAU will open a six-game series (all dates TBA) in Flagstaff in the 2023 season. The Lumberjacks will also host the Trailblazers in 2025 and 2027, while DSU and NAU will square off inside Trailblazer Stadium in 2024, 2026 and 2028. Dixie State played at NAU in its fourth game as an NCAA D-II member in 2006 (L, 14-66; 9/16/06).
